Apple to manufacture iPhone 14 in India

Apple Inc on Monday (26 September) said it will manufacture its latest Iphone 14 in India, as the tech giant moves some of its production away from China. The tech giant will manufacture the iPhone 14 model at its manufacturing partner Foxconn’s factory which is located near Chennai. Foxconn is the largest contract electronics manufacturer worldwide and a major iPhone assembler.

“The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple has expanded its manufacturing plans in India in order to achieve goals, establishing an App Design and Development Accelerator in Bengaluru as well as other programmes with local organisations to boost renewable energy and training. While the June quarter saw record growth in the US, Europe, and the Asia Pacific, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook, it saw nearly double growth in revenue in India and strong growth in markets such as Brazil, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Analysts at JPMorgan expect Apple to shift around 5% of iPhone 14 production to India, which is the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China, by the end of 2022. In a report last week, JPM analysts predicted that by 2025, Apple could make one out of four iPhones in India. It said that due to the COVID-19 risks and subsequent restrictions in China, countries such as India, Vietnam and Thailand became better places for Apple than China due to low labor costs, skilled manpower support, and attractive policies and government support.

Apple unveiled its 2022 iPhone lineup at its ‘Far Out’ event on 7 September. The series includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the all-new iPhone 14 Plus. The Cupertino-based company has dropped the ‘mini’ lineup with the iPhone 14 series. The 2022 iPhone series has a powerful sensor, better camera, and satellite messaging option, which can send SOS messages in case of emergency.
