At least six Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Personnel were killed and several others injured when a bus fell into a river in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam area, an official said. The jawans were returning from Amarnath Yatra duty.

The Amarnath Yatra began on June 29 from Jammu and Kashmir amid tight security arrangements. Along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the army and local police are engaged in providing security to the pilgrims. The bus was carrying 37 Itbp Personnel and two policemen fell into a deep gorge between Chandanwari and Pahalgam, a police official said. According to reports, two ITBP personnel died on the spot, while 10 others were seriously injured. 25 ITBP personnel and two policemen were also injured in the accident.

At present, no detailed statement has come out from ITBP. The police only said that the injured jawans have been shifted to the hospital. It is being told that the bus in which the jawans were traveling was a police bus and suddenly after its brakes failed, the bus fell into the river on the roadside.

“Six ITBP personnel have lost their lives, while several other personnel received injuries, who are being airlifted to Army hospital, Srinagar for treatment,” a police official was quoted as saying by ANI. The accident was so big that the bus fell into the river about 200 feet near Chandanwadi. It is not yet clear how many soldiers were affected in the accident. Disaster management teams have been sent to the spot for rescue work.

“We are in touch with local administration and teams of disaster management have been rushed to the site for the rescue operation,” said ITBP. President Murmu said, “The tragic loss of precious lives of ITBP personnel in the unfortunate accident at Anantnag, J&K fills me with sadness. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
