Earlier this month, the BBC reported that Brighton and Hove City Council in the United Kingdom overwhelmingly elected the first Muslim mayor of South Asian origin.
After Mohammed Asaduzzaman was elected to Brighton & Hove City Council in the Hollingdean and Fiveways district last May, the council members gave him full support.

“Mr. Asaduzzaman was a warm, kind, amusing, and ambitious man for our city, and the social, cultural, political, and economic fabric of the city has already been impacted by his compassion. “Having lived in Brighton for thirty years, he has integrated himself into the community,” stated Bella Sankey, the council leader.
“His journey from Bangladesh to Brighton exemplifies a life dedicated to public service and community betterment,” the speaker continued.
With a degree in political science, Mr. Asaduzzaman has previously collaborated with the state minister for water and irrigation in Bangladesh. Serving as the first citizen and presiding over entire council meetings, the mayor’s duty is primarily ceremonial.
He helped those in need of legal assistance, gave away 500 complimentary dinners, and backed vaccination campaigns during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Every year, the mayor has a habit of giving to local organizations. Asaduzzaman’s selections include the Royal Pavilion and Museums Trust, Chomp Brighton, My University Hospitals Sussex, BHT Sussex, and the Sussex Cricket Foundation.
