For the Pakistan vs. India match, why is Harbhajan Singh unhappy with “drop-in” pitches?

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has voiced his displeasure with the concept of drop-in pitches for the most anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and Pakistan.

The suspenseful match is scheduled for June 9 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Eight World Cup matches—two each involving Pakistan and India—will take place in New York. Up to ten pitches landed in New York, and earlier this month, installation work got underway.

Harbhajan, however, criticized the choice, claiming that nobody can predict how certain pitches will perform. He said that it might be difficult for even the curators of the pitch to predict its behavior.

The legendary Indian player, who competed for the Blues in the 2007 T20 World Cup, emphasized the value of warm-up matches because it’s the only way to observe how these wickets behave.

Nothing is known about the pitches at Nassau Cricket Stadium, to be honest. It’s possible that not even the custodians of the pitch will know how long it will last. How much water has been added, and how much heat would that be? What kind of bounce would it provide? At a Star Sports-hosted press conference, Harbhajan stated.

“After those drills are completed there, we’ll know how the field is responding. After that, we can consider combinations. We couldn’t say anything about team combinations before understanding that.

Recall that the stadium is now undergoing development in preparation for hosting eight World Cup matches in New York. The first match will feature the 2014 T20 World Cup champions, South Africa and Sri Lanka. There would be seating for about 34,000 spectators within the stadium.
