LHC orders nikkah registrar to take action over marriage of an underage girl

On Tuesday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order for legal action against a Nikkah Registrar who had arranged an underage girl’s marriage.

The choice was made during the petition hearing involving a little girl. The petitioner stated that Shahdara, Lahore, was where the case pertaining to the girl’s kidnapping was filed.

The girl stated in court that she was 15 or 16 years old and that she got married of her own free will when questioned about her age and marital status.

The judge responded by directing the filing of a petition against the nikkah registrar for forcing the minor girl into marriage and for the judicial magistrate to make a decision.

When Azmat Bibi, the petitioner, requested the return of her young daughter, the order was first given on Saturday.

The court mandated that documents verifying the bride’s age be shown to the nikah registrar, the person performing the ceremony, and any witnesses at the time of the marriage.

Pakistan pledged to the United Nations that, as part of its strategy to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it would make sure that forced and underage marriages were eliminated in the nation by 2030.

It has long been known that marriage before the age of eighteen is detrimental to a woman’s development. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women is overseen by an expert organization, and one of its requirements is that adults who wish to marry must be at least 18 years old.
