2024 Paris Olympics Schedule: Events, Dates, and More

Thousands of athletes will assemble in the nation’s capital for the largest Summer Games ever in July as France prepares to host the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The light in the Greek city was also ignited on Monday at the Olympia Temple of Hera to signify the beginning of the festival.

The organizers anticipate packed stadiums and a spectacular opening ceremony in the city’s center, along the Seine River, which runs through the center of the city.

At the site of the ancient Olympics, actors dressed as priestesses kindled the flame, which will be passed around in a relay to fire the cauldron and signal the start of the Games.

776 BC is when the first games in recorded history were played.

The flame on a shrine was said to burn always in ancient Olympia, symbolizing the Games’ enduring energy.

Initially, more than 600 torchbearers representing elite athletes and general public would travel a 5,000-kilometer route across Greece over the course of more than 11 days in the first relay.

The flame will be turned over to the Paris Olympic organizers in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens at the conclusion of the event.

A three-masted ship named the “Belem” will carry the torch to Marseille, where it will be welcomed by over 150,000 spectators.

It is expected to reach France on May 8, when the relay’s second phase will begin. It will keep burning all the way until the closing ceremony.
