Nepra will punish Fesco severely for the electrocution accidents

The National Electric Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is anticipated to take the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) to court for their carelessness in enforcing mandatory safety rules, which include grounding high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) poles.

Regarding the start of legal action against the distribution firm of Faisalabad for breaking the safety code, which resulted in three years of deadly incidents, the electricity regulator released an official statement.

According to the statement, Nepra chose to send Fesco a show-cause notice for failing, in spite of promises, to follow safety procedures and requirements for halting power leaks.

The distribution firm’s comments, it noted, were “far away from ground realities.”

The steel structures for grounding power poles “has become ineffective due to deterioration and change of moisture contents at the sites over the passage of time,” according to the regulator, which found anomalies in Fesco’s explanations.

There were five electrocution accidents in 2020–21, six in 2021–22, and four in 2023 as a result of the absence of safety requirements.

The nation’s top power regulatory body discovered last month that K-Electric (KE) and other power-supplying corporations were overcharging millions of customers, so the agency decided to file a lawsuit against them.

The complaints about inflated, excessive, and incorrect bills that distribution companies charged customers during the months of July and August were received by the authorities, which had taken “very serious” notice of them. The complaints came from all throughout Pakistan.

A committee was established to investigate the issue of excessive charging.

Nepra further ordered Discos to file a compliance report within 30 days and to take legal action against the relevant officials for violating the Consumer Service Manual and other relevant documents in accordance with their service regulations.
