Being the first female sci-fi film director, Star Wars’ new director discusses her experience

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the new director of Star Wars, recently commented on being the first female science fiction film director.

Sharmeen has made history by being the first woman and person of color to helm a Star Wars film starring Daisy Ridley.

“I’m really excited about the project because I think what we’re going to create is something very special,” the 45-year-old filmmaker stated in a CNN exclusive interview. He is Canadian by nationality.

Steven Knight’s upcoming Star Wars film is expected to start production this year and go under the new title Star Wars: A New Beginning or Star Wars: New Jedi Order.

“It’s about time that a woman comes forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away,” Sharmeen continued. “We’re in 2024 now.”

In April 2023, the film’s announcement was made, announcing Daisy would reprise her role as Rey in the updated storyline set 15 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

At last year’s Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, revealed that Daisy’s upcoming feature would follow Rey as she creates a new Jedi Order.

Kathleen explained, “Well, we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. We’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker.'”

“Who are the Jedi?’ is a topic of much debate,” she continued. How do they proceed? What condition is the galaxy in? We’re heading there because she is working to reconstruct the Jedi Order using the texts and the assurances she gave Luke.
