Former prime minister and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, stated on Friday that his goal was to hold people accountable for creating false allegations against him, which resulted in his resignation as prime minister in 2017.

Addressing the PML-N parliamentary board meeting in Lahore, he stated, “This [accountability] was necessary so that the people can know the truth and justice can arise.”

The £190 million corruption case, in which former prime minister Imran Khan was also accused, was dubbed the “biggest corruption scandal in the history of the country” by Nawaz.

The supreme head of the PML-N, mocking Imran Khan, expressed regret that the person who had accused others of being thieves had now become the “biggest thief himself”.

Nawaz made reference to Imran and added, “Someone who used to talk about ‘Riasat-e-Madina’ was devoid of morality.”

Nawaz asserted that while hardships are a natural part of life, the PML-N has not given up on patience in the face of injustice.

The three-time prime minister stated that he wished to rescue Pakistan from its current predicament and put the nation back on the path of development.

He said that anyone who wanted to go into politics should only do so in order to lead the nation toward progress by engaging in politics in a way that is realistic and dedicated to changing the lives of the people.

He believed that the future of the nation would undoubtedly shift if there was a love for service.

In the 75 years since Pakistan’s founding, democratically elected prime ministers have not served out their full five-year terms. Nawaz bemoaned this and said it was regrettable that “games” were being played to topple political regimes.

Nawaz reiterated his criticism of Imran, saying that the “player” lacked knowledge of the global economy and affairs.

Nawaz stated that the then-prime minister Imran Khan allegedly put pressure on his ministers to approve a deal with the UK’s National Crime Agency on the repatriation and legalization of illicit proceeds without revealing its details during a cabinet meeting.

This was discussed in relation to the National Accountability Bureau’s Al-Qadir trust case, which implicates Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and other accused parties in a graft case alleging they received financial favors and other perks from legalizing illicit revenues when the PTI government was in power.

Remembering how he was dismissed from office as prime minister and then disqualified in the Panama case, he bemoaned the fact that his removal was due to his failure to declare the money he received from his son in annual returns to the Pakistani Election Commission. He claimed that this was an injustice and a farce of justice
