Nawaz, US ambassador meet in Lahore

The leader of the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif, met with US Ambassador Donald Blome on Saturday in Lahore. During their conversation, they talked about the political and economic climate of the nation, with a focus on his party’s election preparations.

Blome met with Sharif as part of a series of meetings with politicians as election season intensifies. Other politicians Blome met with were Yusuf Raza Gilani of the PPP and Jahangir Tareen, the leader of the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP).

The meeting between the US envoy and the leading PML-N figure takes place in tandem with Nawaz’s public appearances in the run-up to the 2019 elections, which he began on October 21 after his return to the nation.

According to the statement, Nawaz agreed with him regarding the political and economic climate in Pakistan, with a particular emphasis on how prepared his party was for the next round of elections.

“The people of Pakistan would once again place their trust in the PML-N to navigate the country through the numerous challenges it currently faces,” the former prime minister told the US envoy during their conversation.

The two leaders also discussed US-Pakistan bilateral ties and cooperation on shared international issues.

Both leaders “acknowledged the significance of a steadfast and robust partnership between the two countries,” according to the statement.

The significance of investigating avenues to augment collaboration and consolidating the favorable consequences that serve as the foundation for the robust bilateral rapport between the United States and Pakistan was underscored.

The two also talked about a number of other topics, such as trade, the economy, security, climate change, and regional stability.

The “plight of innocent Palestinians who are being mercilessly killed by the indiscriminate Israeli bombardment and imposition of siege around Gaza” was another topic brought up by Nawaz.

He demanded that hostilities cease right away and that anyone affected by the conflict receive emergency medical and humanitarian aid.

Regarding the talks with “political actors” in Multan and Lahore, the US embassy issued a statement.

“During his interactions with a wide range of Pakistani political figures, US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald A. Blome met with leaders of several political parties at events hosted by former Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani in Multan, as well as former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Jahangir Khan Tareen, the founder of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) in Lahore.

They talked about how crucial it is to have free and fair elections and how Pakistani citizens should have the freedom to select their own leaders. They also talked on the growth of the US-Pakistan “Green Alliance” framework and the advantages of the trade and investment ties between the two countries.

Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairperson of the PPP, also had a meeting earlier today in Karachi with Jane Marriott, the British High Commissioner in Pakistan.

In order to help resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict, Zardari reportedly requested the UK to play a reconciling role, according to a PPP statement.

The advancement of the two countries’ bilateral relations was another major topic of debate.

Zardari wished Prince Charles a happy birthday and expressed his congratulations on David Cameron’s selection as the new British Foreign Minister.
