Redefining luxury and safety: The journey of installing a fire-rated decking system in a London penthouse

A series of raised platforms resembling column supports were visible from the underlying structural walls.

Constructing A Secure Foundation

To construct a secure foundation, Wallbarn MetalPad D adjustable height pedestals were used in conjunction with Wallbarn aluminium rails/joists. Both Box Rails and I-Plus beams were utilised due to the varying height thresholds in the area.

In areas with tight height thresholds, the lowest pedestals were fitted to 20mm Box Rails, while in other areas, the 100mm high I-Plus Beam was doubled up and mounted on larger MetalPad D pedestals to ensure a consistent level for the deck boards.

The top layer of aluminium rails was fixed at a diagonal angle to accommodate the laying pattern of the Exadeck Porcelain deck boards. This allowed the decking fixing clips to be mounted perpendicular to the rails.

For structural integrity and stability, connector brackets were used where the rails intersected.

Utilising Porcelain Decking Boards

Exadeck Porcelain Decking Boards feature a side milling profile, into which hidden wing clips are fitted to secure the boards and maintain a consistent gap for drainage.

This meticulous manufacturing process ensures that the Exadeck porcelain boards have straight lines across the entire area, eliminating the risk of curling, and changes in thickness, or width.

The consistency of the material made it easier to achieve precise and clean lines, overcoming challenging detailing effortlessly.

The duplex terrace was finished with a clean, modern, and consistent appearance, resulting in a stunning and durable decked terrace that fully complies with the highest fire regulations.
