A new version of a popular diabetes drug can be marketed as a weight-loss drug in the U.S., regulators said Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Wegovy, a high-dose version of Novo Nordisk’s diabetes semaglutide for long-term weight management.

In company-funded studies, participants who took Wegovy lost an average of 15% weight, about 34 pounds (15.3 kilograms). Participants lost weight steadily for 16 months before reaching a plateau. The average weight loss in the comparison group that took the healthy shots was about 2.5%, or just under 6 pounds.

“With existing drugs, you get 5% to 10% weight reduction, and sometimes you don’t,” said Dr. Harold Bays, medical director of the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center. Bays, who is the chief scientific officer of the Association for Obesity Medicine, helped study the drug.

A 5% weight loss can provide health benefits, such as improvements in energy, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, but that amount is often not enough for weight-loss patients, Bays said.

According to Bays, Wegovy appears to be much safer than previous obesity drugs that have “come under fire” for safety concerns. Wegovy follows a trend of manufacturers of relatively new diabetes drugs testing them to treat other conditions common to people with diabetes.
