There are many different players involved in the conversion of T4 (inactive thyroid hormone) to T3. About 20% of this conversion occurs in the intestine via intestinal sulfatase. Leaky gut interrupts this conversion process and causes T3 levels to be lower than normal.3 Likewise, the liver also accounts for 20% of this conversion from T4 to T3.
