STATEN ISLAND, NY – It’s honeybee swarm season, according to Nick Rozak, Staten Island beekeeper and owner of Green Stinger Trading. Rozak keeps hives in Stapleton, Rosebank, New Brighton and Port Richmond.
How To Remove A Wasp Nest
“We had our first reported bee swarms on Staten Island (Sunday),” Rozak said. “Swarming Bees are relatively harmless despite their scary appearance, but if you find one near your home, they should be removed due to the likelihood that they will move into your house or car.”
Rozak recommends not spraying the bees and calling it a bee for professional removal. “First, stay calm and leave them alone,” Rozak said. “The bees form a huge cluster to protect the queen bee and to control the temperature of the cluster. Swarms that form clusters are simply resting while scout bees go out in search of a new home.
“They don’t intend to stay in that location for more than a few days at most. Most of the bees you look at are so bloated with honey and other resources that they can’t physically use their stingers or fly properly.”
Rozak says he – or any beekeeper – will safely remove the bees from your property and relocate them to a new home. “Don’t spray them and don’t call an exterminator,” he said. “If you call a good exterminator, they’ll call a beekeeper, anyway. If they’re not as good, they might try to kill them and charge you for it.”
Effective Ways On How To Get Rid Of Bees Naturally

The recent decline in bees and other pollinators threatens US crop yields and poses a risk to global food security, according to a recent study. Most of the world’s crops rely on honey bees and wild bees for pollination, so declines in managed bee and wild bee populations raise concerns about food security.
“We all need to help restore the bee population and they need your help as much as we need it to survive,” added Rozak. “In New York City, beekeepers try to get rid of all the swarms we can because they have very little natural habitat left, the chances of them dying or moving into an attic or garage are high ok
“When a beekeeper applies for a NYC Beekeeping permit, we all agree to help remove these swarms. If you don’t call a beekeeper soon enough and bees move into your walls and start building a new hive, that will be something completely different that will cost you.”
How To Identify Different Types Of Bees
Honey bees are ‘super-organisms’ that can only survive in colonies, or hives. “Swarming is how honeybees create new hives,” Rozak said. “Once or twice a year a healthy beehive will split in two, create a new queen and send the old queen away with half the bees to form a new hive elsewhere.
“Seeing swarms of honeybees in your neighborhood is a great sign that your environment is improving and that the bees are healthy, that the plants are healthy.”
According to Rozak, the location of the cluster is random – usually in a tree. “But on Staten Island, it could be on the side of your house, on a car, a bike or a patio umbrella,” he said. “Once the beekeeper sees the swarm and determines that the location is safe to work (ie, not on a power line or traffic light), the beekeeper will set up a box and try to “shake off” most of the bees into the box.
Once most of the bees are in a safe box, the beekeeper waits, sometimes until after sunset for all the scout bees to come back so that the bees can also be transferred to the box. The bees will know that the queen bee has moved into the box and will naturally follow her in.
How To Stop Carpenter Bees From Attacking Your Home
“Once the Beekeeper feels that all the bees are in the box and no longer flying, we will take them away and place them in a local apiary,” said Rozak.
If you find a honey bee swarm, call 311 or 911; the NYPD has an official beekeeper who will dispose of them safely, but if the bees are in a safe location it is best to use a local Beekeeper.

I got a call from a family who had a hive of wild honey the night before their house! I had no experience removing wild beehives and the thought of climbing a 10′ ladder and removing the hive myself scared the living daylights out of me!
