General form: _____  ___ + ___ Example: H2O  _____ + _____ KClO3  _____ + _____ Remember that the “HONClBrIF” element alone is diatomic! A compound + AX A X H2 O2 O2 KCl

INGREDIENTS 2) _______________: (sometimes called “combination” or “synthesis”) the reaction of _____ ____________________ (usually metals and nonmetals) to form ______ ______________. It is the opposite of decomposition. (Same reaction category as above, just reversed.) General form: ___ ___  _____ Example: Al Cl2  _______ PbO + H2O  ______ Two substances One compound + A Metal hydroxide → hydroxide

3) _____________ substitution: The reaction between ____ _____________ and ___ ____________, producing different _____________ and _____________. General form: ____ + __  ____ __ ____ + __  ____ __ The element that is trying to replace another element must be ________ _______________ larger than the element it is replacing. You have to use an active series to see if a reaction occurs. Table_________ ___ = More reactive elements from ____ to ____ can displace hydrogen in water, forming metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas. Single compound One element Complex element + AX Y AY X AX B BX A + More reactivity Higher level Li Na

Double Replacement Reaction Definition And Examples

Example: NaCl F2 _____ + _____ FeCl K _____ + _____ HCl Zn _____ + _____ HCl Au _____ + _____ H2O Na _____ + _____ H2O Fe _____ + _____ AgNO3 + Cu _____ + _____ NaF Cl2 KCl Fe ZnCl2 H2 No reaction H2 NaOH H(OH) No reaction CuNO3 Ag

4) _______________ Substitution: A reaction between _____ ______________ (sometimes called “ions”) dissolved in water to produce _____ ______________ , one of which is ______________ . Water or gas may be one of the two compounds produced. General form: ____ + ____  ____ + ____ You must use a solubility table to see which product is a precipitate. Solubility table key ___ or _____= Precipitate example: CaCl2 (aqueous solution) AgNO3 (aqueous solution)  _________ + ________ NaOH (aqueous solution) + HCl (aqueous solution)  ________ + ________ Two compounds Two compounds are insoluble AX(aq) BY(aq) AY (aq) BX(s) + + I sS Ca(NO3)2 (aq) AgCl (aq) NaCl H2O (l)

5) _______________: The reaction between carbon/hydrogen (sometimes oxygen) _______________ and _____. The product is always the same… ________ + ________ This reaction is so simple! do not miss it! General form: CxHy + O2 → ____ + ____ Example: C2H O2 → _______ + _______ C7H6O O2 → _______ + _______ Combustion O2 Compounds CO2 H2O CO2 H2O CO2 H2O CO2 H2O

6) _______________: Nuclear reactions are of two types, ______________ fission reaction involves a heavy nucleus which splits into two or three pieces. Fusion reactions involve the joining of two light nuclei into one heavier nucleus. New elements are formed! You will not be asked to predict a product! Examples of nuclear fission reactions: nuclear fission and fusion nuclear weapons (atomic bombs)

A Chemical reaction is a process or chemical change that converts one group of substances (reactants) into another group of substances (products). The process involves breaking chemical bonds between atoms and forming new bonds, so the reactants and products have the same number and type of atoms. Chemical changes are described by chemical equations. There are many types of Chemical Reactions. Here are the four main types of chemical reactions, along with other key reaction types.

Remember that reaction types have different names. The four main types of chemical reactions are:

However, there are many other types of reactions. The table below summarizes some key points about the main types of chemical reactions:

In a synthesis, direct combination, or composite reaction, two (or more) reactants combine to form a more complex product. The general form of the reaction is:

Single Replacement Reaction Definition And Examples

Compounds break apart or break down into smaller fragments during chemical decomposition or analytical reactions. The general form of the reaction is:

A single displacement, single displacement or substitution reaction is when one element is displaced from a reactant to form a compound with another element. This reaction has the general form:

An example of a single displacement reaction is the combination of zinc with hydrochloric acid to form zinc chloride and hydrogen gas. Zinc replaces or replaces the hydrogen in hydrochloric acid:

When the reactants cation and anion “exchange partners,” the reaction is called a double displacement, double displacement, or metathesis reaction. The general form of a double substitution reaction is:

Give Examples Of Double Displacement Reactions

An example of a double substitution reaction is the reaction between sodium chloride and silver nitrate to form sodium nitrate and silver chloride:

A combustion reaction is a reaction between fuel and oxygen to form one or more oxides. Since many fuels are carbon-based, carbon dioxide (CO

Acid-base reaction is a type of double substitution reaction that occurs between an acid and a base. H

Redox stands for reduction and oxidation. Both processes occur simultaneously. Such reactions involve electron transfer and changes in oxidation numbers between reactants. An example is the reduction of I

Compound Interest: A Short Guide To Different Arrows In Chemistry

In an isomerization reaction, the structural arrangement of a compound changes, but its net atomic composition remains the same.

A hydrolysis reaction is a reaction in which one or more water molecules are added to a substance. In some cases, this causes material and water molecules to break apart. The general form of hydrolysis reaction is:

Technically, there are hundreds or even thousands of different types of chemical reactions. However, chemistry students often learn to classify them into 4 main types, 5 main types, or 6 main types. The four main types of chemical reactions are synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, and double displacement. However, keep in mind that some people use different names for these reactions. Other important reaction types are combustion, acid-base, redox reactions, and condensation reactions. In organic chemistry, things get even more complicated, and many reactions have special names. However, these other types of reactions also fall into one of the four main categories!

Lab 4 Conclusion

A condensation reaction is a reaction in which two molecules combine to form a larger molecule, while losing one smaller molecule. The small molecule lost is usually water, but not always. It can be thought of as the opposite reaction of hydrolysis and is an important reaction in the manufacture of many polymers.

Hydrolysis reactions involve breaking chemical bonds by adding water to a substance. In some cases, this addition causes the substance and water molecules to split into two parts. There are three main types of hydrolysis: salt, acid, and alkali. Dissolving sulfuric acid in water is a simple example of hydrolysis.

A displacement reaction is when an element or ion moves out of one compound and into another compound. This usually happens if the element going into the compound is more reactive than the element it replaces. Double displacement reactions also occur, in which the anions and cations of two different molecules exchange positions, forming two different compounds.

An oxidation reaction is sometimes defined as a reaction in which another element “gains” an oxygen atom or forms a bond with an oxygen atom. More generally, they can be defined as reactions in which atoms of an element lose electrons. Oxidation cannot occur without an accompanying reduction reaction – these reactions are called redox reactions.

Chapter 10 “chemical Reactions”

Reduction reactions are sometimes defined as chemical reactions in which other elements “lose” oxygen atoms. More generally, they can be defined as reactions in which atoms of an element gain electrons. Reduction cannot occur without an accompanying oxidation reaction – these reactions are called redox reactions.

A chemical change is a reaction that changes the chemical composition of a pure substance. They occur when a pure substance becomes one or more different pure substances. There are several types of chemical changes.

A chemical reaction produces a new chemical substance or several new substances (products) from one or more reactants.
