Cleanse, tone, hydrate – these three steps have been the basis of many skin care routines for decades. Although the first and last steps are non-negotiable, is toning really necessary? What is Toner anyway? We contacted experts who shared the pros and cons.

Toner is a water-based product designed to remove residual make-up, dirt and oil after cleansing and before any serum or moisturiser. According to Hartman, toner also helps unclog pores and can help brighten skin.

According to Koestline, skin toners fall into two main categories: an astringent toner or a balancing toner. The latter is formulated to be gentle to balance the skin’s pH, hydrate and soothe the skin. These types of toners work for all skin types, especially dry and sensitive skin, and can be used twice a day after cleansing.

“Astringent toners are designed for more oily, combination or acne-prone skin. Many are exfoliating toners and are formulated with exfoliating acids such as AHA (glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid) and BHA (salicylic acid), ” she says, noting that a great exfoliating toner is formulated to gently exfoliate the skin without irritating or sensitizing the skin. However, as gentle as they are, you don’t want to use an exfoliating toner every day. You should do this once or twice a week, unless you have dry skin, in which case once a month. “This can cause a major imbalance in your skin’s microbiome, disrupt your natural skin barrier and make your skin dehydrated. All of which can lead to more pigmentation, sun damage and inflammation.”

What Does Toner Do For Skin?

If your skin is sensitive or tends to be dry, consider choosing a balancing toner to try to avoid the irritation that comes with an exfoliating toner.

The main function of the tonic is to prepare the skin for the serums and creams that are applied afterwards. Depending on its ingredients, it can balance the skin’s pH levels, returning it to an acidic state, which can help prevent acne. So is toner necessary? Technically, no, but it’s a nice addition to your skincare routine.

“In the winter, for example, when the weather is drier, it’s nice to spray the skin with a hydrosol after cleansing, and then moisturize with a nice serum and moisturizer,” says Koestline. “For those with acne-prone skin, a BHA + AHA toner can be very helpful in improving skin texture more quickly. But aside from a gentle cleanser formulated without harsh surfactants, a moisturizer, and a mineral-based SPF, all other skin care steps, no tonic needed.”

The tonic is best used when the skin is still a little damp so that it is better absorbed. Toner should be used immediately after cleansing the face in the morning before antioxidants and sunscreen.

What Is Skin Toner

“One of the best ways to apply toner is to pour it into a clean, dry hand and then pat it around your face with the other hand. You can use a cotton pad or a reusable microfiber pad, but often a lot of the product soaks into the pad and doesn’t transfer on the skin,” says Hartman.

According to Hartman, yes, toners work for all skin types. Those with dry skin should look for alcohol-free toners because alcohol is an ingredient that dries out and strips the skin of its natural oils. “Look for toners with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, rose water, or aloe. These ingredients add moisture to the skin while balancing skin tone,” he says. If you have oily skin, Hartman says to look for toners that contain hydroxy acids or sulfur because these ingredients unclog pores, reduce oil build-up, and chemical exfoliation. “Soothing ingredients like niacinamide, aloe vera and vitamin C can help reduce inflammation and ensure the toner doesn’t over-dry the skin,” he adds.

In general, as with any skin care product, do a patch test on your hand before applying to your entire face to see how your skin reacts to the product.

Hartman recommends Versed Baby Cheeks Hydrating Milk Toner for extremely dry skin. “The coconut water and algae formulation provides more hydration than most toners,” he says. A bonus is that it doubles as a cleanser and makeup remover.

What Is The Difference Between Toner And Tonic?

Koestline’s favorite toner is Rose Hydrosol. “It’s the perfect toner, astringent and anti-inflammatory with the added benefit of smelling great,” she says.

“I like AlumierMD Bright & Clear Solution, which contains lactic acid and vitamin C, to gently remove environmental debris and improve skin texture. It works well on oily skin,” says Hartman.

Hartman is also a fan of Vichy Pureté Thermale Toner because it’s “an affordable, gentle toner that removes all residue and none of the essential oil.”

“Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner is alcohol-free, but packed with niacinamide to calm irritation and remove dead skin cells that make skin look dull,” says Hartman.

Best Face Toners In 2021 For Fresh, Balanced Skin

Fenty Skin Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum is a new cult favorite because it combines a toner and serum to achieve a brightening and toning effect without stripping away too much oil.

Other products perform similar jobs to toners. According to Hartman, an essence can offer similar benefits to a toner (also use an essence after cleansing). “Like toners, essences can help further cleanse the skin and also deliver additional ingredients to benefit the skin,” he says. Micellar water is specially formulated as a second cleansing step to remove makeup residue, dirt or grime. Face mists are also an easy way to refresh your skin with instant hydration. Often these types of products are infused with moisturizing, nourishing ingredients just like toners.

If you’re already using the alternatives above, you can probably skip the toner—that is, unless you’re into an all-step routine, because skincare is actually that indulgent. In that case, go ahead.

A hair tonic is a type of hair product that corrects the color of your hair by improving the tone of bleached or dyed hair. This is key to correcting bad color and getting the perfect shade.

How To Tone Your Hair At Home For That Salon Fresh Look

Want to go blonde? Make sure you choose the right toner. You probably already know that you have to use bleach to lighten your hair. To achieve a natural blonde look rather than a bright yellow or brassy orange, you need to apply a hair tonic to your bleached mane. How does that work, you ask? Here’s everything you need to know about hair tonic.

A hair tonic is any product that changes the tone of your hair, and refers to anything that has some pigment to improve, lighten and tone your hair color after dyeing. Toning is the process of removing brass tones and overall correcting your hair color to the actual color you want.

Hair toners can take bright yellow or golden hues to a more natural look of dusty, ash or platinum blonde, such as with a purple shampoo. You can also use a tonic for brunette hair, e.g

, to get rid of brassy orange tones. And they can be a lifesaver if your bleach job went horribly wrong and you’re now walking around with

Tinted shampoos and conditioners, demi-permanent colors and glosses can be considered hair toners because they contain ingredients that adjust the color of your hair. You can even apply hair toner to targeted areas, such as the strands or roots, to change the shade. The trick is to choose the right toner to achieve the desired shade.

Unless your hair is naturally very light blonde, it has shades of red and orange pigment in it. When you lighten your hair, the bleach has to go through each of those pigments to remove the color. Depending on how long you leave the bleach in, your hair may still have an unpleasant brassy hue. That’s where hair tonic comes in.

Hair toner works by changing the undertone of your hair. It won’t completely change the color of your hair, but it will help you manipulate the shade of your naturally blonde or lightened locks. In short, hair tonic products neutralize unwanted warm or brassy tones to help you achieve a shinier, healthier, more natural-looking shade.
