Parenchymal cells in plants are classified based on function and structure. Functionally, parenchymal cells in plants can be classified into the following types:

Chlorenchyma is found in the mesophyll part of leaves. Parenchymal cells have chloroplasts in them. In addition, these cells are also found in the cortex of young plants. Cells are filled with many spaces. Chlorenchymal cells give green color to the wood and aerial roots of plants. Parenchymal cells are responsible for making food through photosynthesis.

Parenchymal cells are dense cells packed in large spaces between the interstices where air bubbles or air sacs are present, providing the necessary transport for the floating plant. In plants, parenchyma is one of three basic types. The other two are collenchyma and sclerenchyma. The thin parenchyma cell wall is one of the distinguishing features of the other two. A thin wall is caused by the absence of a secondary wall (which is in the sclerenchyma). Collenchyma cells, in contrast, have only a basal cell wall but are thicker than parenchyma cells. Most of the collenchyma cells have a solid primary wall. Parenchyma remains the mature living cells. In blood vessels, parenchyma cells are of two types: xylem parenchyma and phloem parenchyma.
