BlackBerry Persona Launched Industry’s First User Behavior AI Technology for Cybersecurity

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Blackberry Limited has announced BlackBerry Persona® Desktop, a part of the BlackBerry Spark® platform that synchronizes analytics-driven security to provide trust within Zero Trust environments. BlackBerry Persona Desktop surfaced as part of BlackBerry® Cyber Suite, is a latest unique offering collaborating EPP (endpoint protection), MTD (mobile threat defense), EDR (endpoint detection and response), and UEBA (user and entity behavior analytics) products in a single package.

Developed on the BlackBerry Spark® Platform, it is the first cybersecurity solution to leverage biometric and behavior-based machine learning models to enable a real-time trust score for laptop and desktop users. It leverages advanced AI and machine learning to facilitate continuous authentication to authenticate user identity in real-time and protect against security breaches.

The BlackBerry Persona Desktop executes all activities of validation within the endpoints itself. It negates the need to share data back to the cloud by empowering Persona to respond faster than other traditional solutions.

This solution is the only resort that offers protection within minutes of a compromise. BlackBerry Persona addresses the unsolvable security challenges such as Stolen Credentials, Insider Threats, and Physical compromises.

1. Stolen Credentials – In case of loss of employee credentials, this feature safeguards the organizational information. Persona analyses a user’s interaction with their device and regulates security risk. It generates alerts to the cloud and instigates automated mitigation actions, such as prompting for second-factor authentication, taken if the user exceeds the risk threshold.

2. Insider Threats – Its behavioral analysis feature saves the organization from rogue employees and determines if their actions seem malicious. Persona also identifies and flags the risk if an employee’s usage patterns deviate from their usual behavior. Alerts and proactive actions are triggered based on administrator-defined policy.

3. Physical Compromises – Persona protects employees and organizations from attacks when the device has been physically compromised and stolen. If any unauthorized user gains access to the endpoint, its biometric capabilities (e.g., keystroke, mouse) could sense a different user and send alerts or lock the device. These solutions happen automatically at the endpoint and don’t require a network connection or interaction with the cloud.

Frank Cotter, Senior Vice President of Product Management at BlackBerry, states that for organizations adopting a Zero Trust model, BlackBerry Persona eradicates the resistance of unnecessary re-authentication continuously verifying a user’s identity after log-in. He further added that BlackBerry Persona uses behavior analysis to recognize software usage patterns and determine what behavior is high or low risk in real-time with continuous authentication. Frank said that they are committed to developing innovative ways to keep their customers safe and secure and are proud to be the first to bring a solution like Persona Desktop to market.

Frank Dickson, Program Vice President, Cybersecurity Products at IDC, said that it has long been a puzzle to place sophisticated endpoint security platforms on devices but allowed a simple username and password to bypass that protection easily.  He said that they have long advocated for embedded user authentication while not impacting user experience. It applies modern technology to validate a user continually.
