TC Energy has no gauge of the cost of Cornerstone pipeline spill clean-up

On Monday, TC Energy (TRP.TO) said it was too early to speculate on the cost of cleaning up a 14,000-barrel spill from its Cornerstone Pipeline, as the Canadian company entered into a clean-up agreement with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Cornerstone is a significant commodity pipeline conveying 622,000 barrels of crude oil every day from Alberta to U.S. processing plants and was briefly shut down in December in the wake of a crack on Dec. 7 and the spilling of oil into a brook in Kansas. In late December, the pipeline continued to receive assistance.

The tidy-up work is progressing, and TC has not yet openly distinguished the reason for the spill.

“We share the EPA’s prioritisation of security and relieving risk to the climate, and we are focused on consenting to the understanding as we progress our reaction, recuperation, and remediation,” TC said in a proclamation.

“It is untimely to infer or conjecture on costs.”

In a clean-up request concluded on Jan. 6, the EPA said the spilled oil affected water in the brook something like 3-1/2 miles downstream, stained vegetation, caused a noticeable sheen on the water, and fundamentally impacted fish and untamed life.

The request said TC should recuperate endlessly oil-debased soil and vegetation and contain the further spread of oil in the stream. All work should be finished under EPA oversight.

“The federal government and the state of Kansas are focused on a thorough cleanup and rebuilding of the impacted region,” EPA Locale 7 Executive Meg McCollister explained.
