How to Carry A 4-Way Holster?

A 4-way Holster (4WH) provides the perfect balance of comfort, protection, and convenience. It offers four potential Carry positions, allowing you to wear the holster any way you want. You can wear them in vertical, horizontal, cross-draw, and vehicle carry positions.

At Black Hills Leather Store, we design custom 4-way holsters that offer unparalleled craftsmanship and versatility. Our 4WH designs offer optimal flexibility with multiple carry positions, all available in a single, sturdy leather belt holster. It can adapt to all your daily carry needs.

Types of Positions for 4-Way Holsters

The different carry positions and their features are as follows:

1. Vertical Carry

You will have to thread the belt completely through the belt panel. It is recommended to carry the gun on your hip on your dominant side. Vertical carry is widely popular, requiring the gun’s barrel to face down. This position is usually followed with shoulder holsters and makes it easier to hide your weapon.

When following a shoulder holster position, it is recommended to wear it high enough. Else, it can cause neck strain.

2. Canted Cross Draw Position

When worn in the cross-draw position, the holster is worn on the non-dominant side of your body and in front of the hip. The cross-draw holster features the muzzle angled slightly outward. The grip is canted to enable a rapid draw.

You can have your 4-way holster custom-designed to hold the gun and magazines. When worn this way, the holster should not cause any strain on the neck. This form of carry is usually harder to hide under clothing. Among other concerns, the weapon is likely to print through thin clothing.

3. Behind the Back

You can also carry your 4-way holster behind the back. The holster will be worn at the center of your lower back and over the spine. This carry position is also referred to as the 6 o’clock position.

Behind the back used to be a more common carry technique in the past. It is still quite prevalent in Hollywood films. It is recommended to avoid this carry position. This carry is commonly referred to as the small of back (SOB) carry and has many benefits and drawbacks. Some main benefits are as follows:

  • Effective Concealment: This way of carry makes your gun more concealable, especially when you are standing. The small of the back refers to the hollow formed due to the curvature of the spine.
  • Comfort: This carry technique also provides comfort when you move and even when you have a certain type of body. SOB carry is comfortable even when you need to run. It is furthermore suited for those who have a more pronounced waistline or wide hips. It is also more comfortable for those who are recovering from an injury to the abdomen or hips.

You may want to evaluate this carry position if access, speed, safety, and re-holstering are big concerns for you.

4. Vehicle Carry

Your 4-way holster can also prove to be a perfect vehicle carry. If you know how to wear it, your holster and gun will not jab into your body when seated in your car. You will be wearing your holster in a horizontal position on the front, and it will be easier to draw while sitting in the car.
