Tips for Choosing Your Western Rigs

Pommel holsters are the first examples of gunleather use for western Rigs. They were first used by the military across the Atlantic before the US colonies. They provided a simple and easy way to carry pistols and accessories. Today, there are so many options it can be difficult to choose the right one. In this guide, we would like to share some tips on choosing the right rigs to address your unique needs and preferences.

Types of Rigs

It is recommended to choose a western rig, based on your preferred technique of carry. If you need a concealed carry weapon (CCW) holster, it must be completely concealed under all circumstances. You cannot choose a rig that protrudes from your clothing.

Cross-Draw Rigs

If you drive often, you should consider choosing a cross-draw rig. As a right-handed person, you should be wearing it between the front of your left hip and navel. The grip will be down and towards your body’s center.

This is an easy position for drawing a gun when you are seated in your vehicle. Besides, it also provides an excellent level of concealment. Some cross-draw holsters can also provide strong-side hip placement with the help of belt slots.

Belt Rigs

Belt holsters are designed to be worn comfortably on the hip bone. You can wear them in the front or the back. You should determine the positioning based on your activities:

  • When worn in the front, they may poke your thigh and stomach when you sit
  • When you wear them in the back, they can make it difficult to sit

Your body type also affects your choice of a holster. If you have a large belly or you have a slim body structure, an outside-the-waistband rig can be an ideal option.

Shoulder & Ankle Rigs

When choosing shoulder rigs, we recommend that they should be custom designed for your physique. This is important for both comfort and convenience. If you like ankle holsters, it is recommended to wear them for short periods of time.

Choosing the Material

When choosing your rig, make sure that the holster fits your gun. Leather is the most commonly used material and there will always be some natural give. Oak tanned cowhide is popular and is known for its stiffness. It will still conform to the shape of the gun over time.

Choosing rigs with steel shanks can help retain the form. Some options have a thin steel liner for greater effectiveness.

Your holster must provide enough amounts of hold and give. Keep in mind the need to draw quickly, yet you don’t want your sidearm bouncing out of the holster. Having a leather thong looping over the hammer can help. Make sure it will not get in the way.
