9 Easy Ways to Reframe Failure

How to reframe failure and turn it into feedback: isn’t that the question of the day? If you’ve “failed” at something recently, here are 9 ways to look at it through a different lens and get some fresh perspective. You’re welcome!

Failure is inevitable. Nobody can succeed at everything they try, after all. But the way you see Failure — now that’s what determines whether you’ve truly failed, or not.

Take it from me. I’ve had plenty of failures over the years. When I failed a maths exam in 12th grade. Or when I got dumped by my first BF for being bipolar. Or even when I did 19 free strategy calls in one month and still booked ZERO clients.

And when I lost a client last month and cried for over an hour at Starbucks.

But failure is just feedback. A loss is just a lesson to learn. Here are 9 ways to Reframe a bad situation instead of thinking, “Why do I always fail?”

What can this negative situation teach me?

Think about it: failure is just feedback. When something goes wrong, it teaches you how NOT to do something next time. Take that as a life lesson, and move on.

What is the GOOD that has come from this?

There is almost always a silver lining when things don’t go according to plan. Here’s a way to Reframe Failure, for example: you lost a client? Well, if they weren’t 100% crazy about you, then it wasn’t the right fit. At least now, your dream client has space to come into your life and pay you the money you deserve!

Will I remember this setback 6 months from now?

Failure can sting — right now. But 6 months from today, will you still cry over this so-called failure? Or will you have already reframed it and moved on? Chances are, it’s the latter.

How can this bring me closer to my higher self?

Your higher self is your future self — the person you know you are meant to be, want to be, and deserve to be. Every moment of your life, every failure, every lesson is a push towards that higher self. If you want to reframe failure, ask yourself: how am I now one step closer to my higher self?

How can I use this to serve my clients or myself?

If you’re a business owner, chances are, you can use this failure and the lesson you learned from the earlier reframe (what NOT to do) to serve your future self or even your existing or next clients. Failure is feedback, feedback is knowledge, and knowledge is power!

What would my alter ego (my higher self) do?

If your higher self — your dream self — is a 6-figure online business coach, do you think they would sit and feel like shit and then self-sabotage their way to even more failure? Or would they let themselves process their emotions, make an action plan, and keep going? The latter. So embody that right now.

What can I do to prevent this from happening next time?

Hey, damage control is important. Reframe this failure by asking yourself how you can stop it from happening next time. What should you have done, in hindsight?

How would past me react to this? How do I choose to react differently?

When I lost that client last month, I cried for an hour at Starbucks. But I knew my past self would have cried for two hours, then gone home and slept all day, then thought about quitting her business. I, however, chose to react differently. I got on with it. I let go of the disappointment and failure and embraced the silver lining and the life lessons. Do that.

What would it take for me to ask for help?

This is possibly the most important mindset reframe you can use when you’ve failed. Asking for help is never weak — in fact, it’s a sign of bravery, courage, strength. If your mindset has been holding you back, making you self-sabotage, leading to more and more failure, consider hiring a coach to support you on your business journey.
