THE POSITION
Under general supervision, assists in the supervision and operation of a community recreation center; and to perform related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)
- Plans, organizes, and supervises a variety of recreational activities at a recreation center.
- Acts as liaison to the surrounding neighborhood to improve recreational programming and recommends new programs.
- Coordinates activities of leagues and tournaments assigned to recreation center; monitors registration of participants in programs.
- Enforces rules and regulations to ensure the safety and welfare of participants.
- Conducts routine inspections of facilities and equipment.
- Assists in budget preparation and monitors recreation budget expenditures in specified areas.
- Requisitions supplies and equipment.
- Drafts promotional materials, correspondence and reports.
- Recruits seasonal, part-time and volunteer staff.
- Supervises, trains and evaluates personnel.
- Attends meetings and training sessions.
- Provides information to and consults with the public.
- Manages fund raisers and snack bar operation.
- Reconciles bank statements.
- Monitors and maintains workfare programs.
- Monitors contract services provided by outside organizations for special events.
- Works closely with Sheriff's department and gang task forces by monitoring and logging activity on a daily basis as well as meets and confers with Sheriff supervision personnel on a daily basis.
- Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination equivalent to two (2) years of college courses in recreation or related field and three (3) years of experience in recreation. Full time paid experience in recreation may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge of:
- Principles of supervision.
- Sports, games and group activities.
- Rules, practices and equipment used in diversified recreation program.
- Learn and apply first aid and safety technique.
- Organize recreational activities for varied segments of the community.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and must be insurable by the City's insurance carrier. Possession of a valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate is desirable.
WORKING CONDITIONS

- Require ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend.
- Mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
- May be required to perform work which involves frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may be approximately 40 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 60 pounds.

- Employees pay the full Employee Member Contribution on a pre-tax basis.

- The City contracts with CalPERS for medical benefits, which offers employees a choice of various HMO's and PPO's.
- The City shall pay the required monthly minimum of $143.00 towards the monthly health insurance premium.
- For unit members who have eight (8) years or more of consecutive service with the City and currently working 1,000 hours or more per fiscal year, the City provides an optional benefit package (medical and vision) and, effective May 26, 2016, the City provides an additional $314.00 per month to be used towards these optional benefits for employee and eligible dependents.
- Paid sick leave shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hours for each 30 hours worked to a maximum of 24 hours per year.
- Unit members shall be entitled to use accrued paid sick time beginning on the 90th day of employment, defined of sick leave accrual and usage.
- Paid sick leave shall be taken in increments of not less than one (1) hour.
Effective calendar year 2012, unit members will receive five (5) hours of holiday pay for each of the following holidays:
- New Years Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
