Uber Quiet Mode – Making a Case for Silence

Uber Quiet Mode hit the news last week. Uber Quiet Mode is a setting in the Uber app that alerts the driver that the passenger would rather not talk during the ride. This new setting might not be such a bad idea for drivers as well.

As a Lyft driver, part of what we’re rated on is the interaction we have with our passengers. This caused Lyft drivers to go out of their way to warm up to our passengers. Now that I drive primarily for Uber, the pressure to verbally tantalize the passenger is not as intense.

Doing The Math

On a good day, I can do 30 rides per day. On a mediocre day, I’ll do 20 rides. So for the sake of this post, lets average my daily ride tally is 25 rides per day.

At 25 rides per day, working 5 days per week my ride total for the week will be 125 rides. Over the course of one month, I will have done 500 rides.

At the 6 month mark, my total rides will be 3000, and after 1 year, 6000. Think of that for a moment. In 1 years time I will have tried to warm up to 6000 people. Unless you’re a politician, celebrity or athlete, that’s more people than most people meet in a lifetime.

That’s also a LOT of talking. I won’t even do the numbers on drivers who have been doing rideshare for 3, 5, 10 years or more!

Uber Quiet Mode Might Be a Blessing In Disguise

I’ve met some really nice people through rideshare over the years. I’ve also had many nice conversations. Through rideshare, I’ve had the opportunity to encourage people. I’ve prayed with and for people.

But after looking at the numbers above, I think I’m ready to take a break from talking for a while. For me, Uber Quiet Mode has come in the nick of time.

I recently polled my visitors to get their thoughts on having the choice to ride in silence. Click HERE to see the results.
