Scott Ingram: You’re listening to the Daily Sales Tips podcast and I’m your host, Scott Ingram. Today’s tip comes from Meshell Baker our favorite Sales Confidence Igniter and Authentic Selling Crusader. Here she is:

Meshell Baker: Today’s tip is Success Executes Excellence. That’s SEE. And you can only be what you see. What does that mean? Well, I’d like to start with a quote by Mindy Kaling, If you don’t see a clear path to what you want, sometimes you have to make it. What that means is your reality is your mentality and everything that you think about and all the success that you see outside of yourself, yours and everyone else’s is what you actually think and believe about yourself. I’m going to give you three tips to actually get clear on what you’re seeing in yourself so you can recreate, rewrite, recalibrate anything that’s not delivering the sales success that your heart desires.

One, write out your perceptions. So this is going to take time. You’re going to make an appointment with yourself. Sit down, pick up a pen, a paper, a keyboard, laptop, whatever it is, make a detailed description of yourself, your whole person physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Start with statements like, I am, or What I’m really proud of myself for is, or What I really like about myself is, and write out at least eight to twelve responses to each one of those. Take your time, list your strengths, your weaknesses. Most people can identify some good and some bad, but they really never take the time to dive deep and really get to the core of what is causing and creating your self-esteem. And your self-esteem is what creates and generates your confidence and courage every time you make a sales call. So go with your gut, be honest, and much detail as possible.

Step two, recall significant moments in your life. Think about the stories that you share from your past. When you are in conversation and communication with people you know, like trust, you are often sharing your past stories. Every human being is telling stories of when they were brave, or when they were amazing, or when it was trauma, or when things went well, or when things didn’t go well. Sit down and write out the top stories you most frequently share. These will give you insights of what you think about yourself. Because if you’re sharing stories and if you are expanding and overtelling the story, adding to the story, then it tells you a lot about your self-esteem and how you feel about yourself and how your past may have had a lot of impact on where you are now. But you want to know what are the stories that you share and how you’re sharing them.

Number three, reflect on your childhood. This is where personality and where your belief system is cultivated in most people is locked in by the time they’re seven, eight, maybe at the oldest, 10 years old. Thinking and reflecting on if you are a happy child, the feelings of disappointment, the feelings of overwhelm, the personal cravings of wanting to be alone or wanting to have companionship or wanting to have someone like you or look at you or notice you or affirm you, these all affect who you are as an adult. So when you can go back and do a deep dive on this value system that was created in you because you have established rules of how you operate and how you actually talk and how you actually are triggered in your emotions based off of your childhood.

So these three steps of taking time to write out who you believe you are, reflect on the significant impactful stories of your life, and then reflect on your childhood will give you a great synopsis, especially if you’re struggling with sales success. This will help you to start to rewrite some things about yourself and refocus. Remember, Success Executes Excellence, and you can only be what you see. I’m going to end with a quote.
