Mobile World Congress is the world’s biggest exhibition for the mobile industry. Its usually featuring the latest technologies and innovations from major manufacturers and providers. Its main purpose is to allow companies and gadget lovers to showcase and display their latest offerings. This is a 3 days event organised by GSMA. Every year this event scheduled, usually in February or early-March.

In 2006, the event moved to Barcelona, with the name Mobile World Congress first used for the 2008 event. In 2011, GSMA declared a long-term deal to extend hosting the event in Barcelona during 2023.

Mobile World Congress is open to the public, however, tickets are usually costly and competitive. This is because it is a possibility to hear from the major players within the industry. Such as Google, Microsoft, Apple and Samsung as they present their latest products, enterprise developments and approach the future trends in mobile.

Why MWC 2020 Has Cancelled?

MWC 2020 – that’s Mobile World Congress 2020 sets to run from February 24-27, but it has now been cancelled after health concerns in the wake of the coronavirus.

The GSM Association (GSMA), the organisation that organizes the show, has decided to cancel the complete event after a type of companies including Sony, LG and HMD Global, pulled out of the show.

As the initial version of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in 2006, the GSMA has gathered the enterprise, governments, ministers, policymakers, workers and enterprise leaders across the wider ecosystem. MWC 2020, Mobile World Congress 2020, Coronavirus.

In a declaration, GSMA CEO John Hoffman stated, “With due regard to the safe and healthful climate in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2020 because the global anxiety about the coronavirus crash, travel concern and other incidents, make it difficult for the GSMA to hold the event”. Mobile World Congress attracts a footfall of over 100,000 attendees from all above the globe. The event also provides a large boost to the economy of Barcelona, Spain.

John Hoffman continued, “The Host City Parties respect and appreciate this judgment. The GSMA and the Host City Parties will proceed to be operating in the community and supporting each other for Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2021 and coming announcements.

Our condolences at this time are with those affected in China, and all around the world.

 Mobile World Congress cancelled on February 12, 2020, less than two weeks before when the event set to take place. We were basically expecting devices from companies like Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, and many more.

The statement comes after various large companies, including Amazon, LG, Sony and NVIDIA, said they plan to skip the conference to keep their employees harmless from the virus. Before cancellation, a CNET report said Samsung had planned to scale back its presence at the event as well.

What is Coronavirus

The coronavirus is a virus that has announced a global emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). On February 16, 2020, there were 71,300 confirmed cases of the virus with the total number of deaths at more than 1550 around the world, according to a WHO report.

Coronaviruses are zoonoses, meaning they are spread between animals to people.  Elaborate investigations detected that SARS-CoV transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Many known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

Common symptoms of coronavirus involve respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing problems. In more critical cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, critical painful respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Conclusion

Mobile World Congress 2020 was established to kick off at the end of this month, with the start date set for February 24, and it would go until February 27. And while the company had set up precautions, and was trying to convince visitors and exhibitors that things would be okay. The potential for something much worse finally managed to the shutdown.

This is probably the right move, still, if it’s going to have a large financial impact on the area. And the companies connected with the trade show. It’s better to play it safe with something like this.
