The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa, launching on 30th May, 2022, is designed to attract extremely brilliant foreign university graduates who will be able to work and live in the UK for two or three years, depending on their degree level.
Applicants will not need a job offer or sponsorship, and holders of this visa will be able to work, be self-employed, and volunteer in the UK.
In a statement, Minister for Safe and Legal Migration Kevin Foster said, “The new High Potential Individual route will make it as straightforward as possible for foreign individuals with high potential to come to the UK.” “Those who have already proved their potential via academic accomplishment will be permitted to enter the UK without having a job offer.”

The first step is to have a degree from a world-renowned university. The UK government has released a list of approved universities in 2022. The British government has released a list of universities featuring in at least two of these 3 renowned rankings:
- Times Higher Education World University rankings
- Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University rankings
- The Academic Ranking of the World Universities

You must have been awarded the degree within five years of application.
The degree can be in any field, but it must be equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree.
Graduates holding a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree will be granted a 2-year visa to reside in the United Kingdom.
Graduates with a Ph.D. or other doctorate degree will be offered a 3-year grant to live in the UK.

Settlement options with the UK High Potential Individual visa
This visa route is not a pathway to settlement; however, the applicant can switch to other work-permitted categories that lead to settlement, like:
- The UK Skilled Worker visa
- The UK Start-up visa
- The UK Scale-up visa
- The UK Innovator visa
High Potential Individual visa English language requirements
To be successfully eligible for a UK Scale-up visa, you will have to meet the High Potential Individual visa English language requirements.
- If the applicant’s degree was not taught in English, he or she must pass an English language test at the B1 level in each of the four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- If the applicant’s degree was taught in English and granted outside the United Kingdom, ECCTIS will need to validate that the qualification fits the requirements for a UK Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree.

Applicants for a UK High Potential Individual visa must show that they have at least £1,270 in their bank account for at least 28 days before to the application deadline.
