100,000 more Ukrainians refugees to seek asylum in the UK under relaxed immigration rules

After Russia’s barbaric invasion on Ukraine, UK has taken a strong stand to condemn Putin on global level

On February 28 2022, Liz Truss (Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom) gave a statement to the House of Commons on different sanctions put in force by the UK government to overthrow the Russian powers and security measures taken in support of Ukraine.
During her speech, she said, “Everyone is clear that Putin must lose. And we will carry on increasing the pressure until he does”.

More Ukrainians to seek asylum in the UK

Priti Patel (Home Secretary of the United Kingdom) has announced 100,000 more Ukrainians refugees will be able to Seek Asylum in the UK under Relaxed Immigration Rules, but ruled out a visa waiver for all those fleeing the war citing security concerns.

The Home Secretary told MPs that Ukrainian refugees with family already in the UK would be able to stay for up to 12 months under the new regulations.

However, after a year they will have to apply for points based or family reunion visa to stay longer.

Present scenario

  • $250 billion has been wiped off the Russian stock market. And their stock market has closed.
  • The UK is the first European nation to back up Ukraine with defensive weapons, which are being used to halt Russian tanks and defend Ukrainian cities. The latest consignment of defensive support left Brize Norton over the weekend.
  • The UK is also lending humanitarian and economic support. The country announced £40 million of humanitarian aid to provide Ukrainians with necessities and vital medical supplies.
  • The country is also supporting Ukraine’s economy – including through £100 million of ODA, and guarantees of up to $500 million in development bank loans.
  • The UK approved asset freezes on Russian banks, banned Russian airlines and private jets from landing in their airspace.

The UK is proud to lead by example and feels particularly responsible, as the UK is a signatory to the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which provided Ukraine with security guarantees.

Further sanctions imposed by the UK

England laid down two new pieces of sanctions legislation on 28 February 2022. The country has already put in place the largest package of sanctions in history.

  • It includes preventing Russian banks from clearing payments in Sterling.
  • With over 50% of Russian trade denominated in Dollars or Sterling, the UK has coordinated action with the USA to damage Russia’s ability to trade with the world.
  • As the legislation comes into force, it will apply to Sberbank – Russia’s largest bank. Full asset freeze on VEB – Russia’s national development bank, SovComBank – 3rd largest privately owned financial institution in Russia, and Otkritie – Russia’s largest commercial banks.
  • The second piece of legislation will ban exports to Russia across a range of critical sectors, which includes – high-end technological, marine and navigation equipment.
  • The UK is all set to introduce the Economic Crime Bill, which will flush Russian oligarchs dirty money out of the United Kingdom.
  • The UK will continue working with G7 allies to cut off the free world’s dependence on Russian gas, depriving Putin of his key source of revenue.

Note for readers

The UK will amend / introduce fresh sanctions depending upon the war severity.
