Juul Blamed for Vaping Crisis

Juul Labs Inc. is taking new measures to defend themselves amongst ongoing allegations that blame their products for a variety of health problems, including the growth of teen Vaping and addiction.

Jule’s part-owner, the Altria Group Inc., has let their head of regulatory affairs move over to take on a role similar to the one he had at the Altria Group Inc. which holds diversified positions across Tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis.

Amid a regulatory backlash against Juul for the growth of teen vaping in the United States, Joe Murrillo has moved over to the e-cigarette maker Juul to help them in ways that are similar to how he helped Atria while in a similar position. Atria’s tobacco companies include names such as Philip Morris USA, the makers of Marlboro cigarettes, and US Smokeless Tobacco Company, the makers of smokeless tobacco brands such as Copenhagen and Skoal.

Murillo is the first big hire of Juul’s new CEO, K.C. Crosthwaite, who had just moved over to Juul from Atria the previous week.

This migration of high-level Atria executives to Juul is partially spurred by the Trump administration’s announcements that it plans to remove all flavored e-cigarettes from store shelves because of their rising popularity amongst minors and young adults. Part of Murillo’s new role is to guide the applications that Juul must submit to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for any products Juul wants to keep on the market beyond May of 2020.

The FDA questioned Juul in September of this year in regards to the company marketing its products as being safer than traditional cigarettes. Juul is now having to produce more documents and information to defend themselves of allegations of illegal marketing practices.

In September, California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, issued an order focused on curtailing the state’s youth vaping epidemic and federal prosecutors in California are now conducting a criminal probe into Juul Labs Inc.
