Procedure to pay Road Tax Punjab online

To make the procedure easy and quick for vehicle owners, the road tax levied on them can be paid through online mode on the official website of Punjab Transport. The online procedure also helps in saving a significant amount of time.

An applicant can complete the procedure to pay road tax Punjab online by following some simple steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Visit the official website of Punjab Transport.

Step 2: Click on the option “Registration”.

Step 3: On the right hand side of the screen, click on “Pay your Taxes & Fees”.

Step 4: You will be redirection to a new page of VAHAN CITIZEN SERVICES.

Step 5: Enter your registration number, State and RTO.

Step 6: Click on “Pay your tax”.

Step 7: Enter the Vehicle Registration number and last 5 characters of the chassis number. Click on “Verify Details”.

Step 8:  On the next page, scroll down and enter your tax mode.

Step 9: Click on the option “Payment”.

Step 10: Select the payment gateway and complete the process.

After making the payment, an error page can occur even if the transaction is completed. In these cases, you need to re-verify the details. Follow the below mentioned steps to re-verify the details.

Step 1: Again visit the official website of VAHAN CITIZEN SERVICES.

Step 2: Enter your registration number, State and RTO.

Step 3: Click on “Status” and choose “Know your application status”.

Step 4: Enter your vehicle registration number and captcha code. Click on submit. A message will appear on the screen and copy your application number from there.

Step 5: Again click on “Status” and choose “Re- verify payment transactions”.

Step 6: Enter the application number and captcha code. Click on “Show details”.

Step 7: Details of the payment would be displayed on the screen. Click on “Re-verify”, then “Check To Bank” and “Confirm Payment”.

Lastly, the Road Tax Punjab payment receipt will appear and you can print it out anytime.

As discussed earlier, the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1924 governs the collection, calculation and execution of the road tax. It clearly states the rules for the mandatory payment of road tax, grant of a licence, refund of tax in some instances, maintenance and determination of the tax.

Two wheeler owners, such as bike owners, who have registered their vehicles post the amendment of the act, are required to put down 1.5% of the bike’s cost as road taxes if the bike has an engine power of up to 50cc. If the engine capacity of the bike is more than 50cc, then the road tax applicable will be 3% of the bike’s cost.

However it is important to note that in either case, vehicle owners have to make a lump sum payment of the road tax rather than paying in instalments.

For wheeler owners, such as car owners, who have registered their vehicles after the amendment of the taxation guidelines are required to pay the road tax Punjab for a new vehicle depending on the cost rather than age. Any car for personal use will be subjected to the road tax at 2% of the car’s cost.

The road tax Punjab levied on commercial vehicles that are not registered in Punjab can be categorized into the following groups:
