Police Clearance Certificate

Police Clearance Certificate(PCC) is issued to Indian Passport holders in case they have applied for Residential Status, Employment or Long term visa or for immigration.  A PCC  certifies to state that there are no criminal records  against the  individual applying for a police clearance certificate. Individuals going abroad on Tourist Visa do not need it.

The service of obtaining a police clearance certificate is not the same as obtaining a passport. PCC is a separate miscellaneous service provided by Indian police. It is not an essential component of the Passport service.

What is the police clearance certificate process?

The process includes registering and logging in to the Passport Seva Online portal, then downloading and fill the form. After that upload the filled form in XML file format. Meanwhile, pay and schedule an appointment. Finally, Visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/Regional Passport Office (RPO) for the booked appointment, along with original documents.

Things to consider before applying for a police clearance certificate process
  • The competent authorities in India decided that henceforth PCC will issue after receipt of fresh police verification on the PCC application. This will apply to all categories of applicants.
  • All PCC applications are accepted only with a valid Passport and not with passport reissue applications.
  • PCC may be applied after reissuing of passport if it is due for renewal.
Note –

Applicant must note that if while applying for PCC, he/she is providing details in PCC application which are different than details available in his/her passport (such as name, place of birth, any discrepancy in parents’ name, change in marital status, addition/deletion of spouse name).

The applicant should instead of applying for PCC, should first apply for the reissue of a passport with changed/current particulars. After the reissue of the passport with changed particulars, the PCC application must be submitted at the BLS.

How to apply police clearance certificate online? Here is the step by step guide for police clearance certificate process online.

  • Firstly, Register through the Passport Seva Online Portal. (Click on the “Register Now link on the Home Page).
  • Secondly, login to the Passport Seva Online Portal with the Login ID created in Step 1
  • Thirdly, click the “Apply for Police Clearance Certificate” link
  • Fourthly, fill in the required details in the form and submit.
  • Fifthly, select the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link on the “View Saved/Submitted Applications” screen to schedule an appointment.

Online Payment is mandatory for booking appointments at all PSK/POPSK/PO.

Select any one of the following online payment modes: 

  1. Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa)
  2. Internet Banking (State Bank of India (SBI) Associate Banks and Other Banks)
  3. SBI Bank Challan
  • Sixthly, click the “Print Application Receipt”   containing Application Reference Number (ARN)/Appointment Number.

Note: Carrying printout of Application Receipt is no longer required.

For proof of receipt at the Regional Passport office, you can produce the message sent to your mobile phone with your appointment details.

  • Seventhly, visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/Regional Passport Office (RPO) where an appointment has been booked, along with original documents.

How to apply Police Clearance Certificate Offline

Here is the process for police clearance certificate process offline. Let’s have a look at the steps that how to apply police clearance certificate offline.

  • Firstly,  download the e-Form through the “Download e-Form link available on the Home Page
  • Secondly, fill in the downloaded e-Form and click the Validate and Save button in it. This will generate an XML file, required later for uploading in the system
  •  Thirdly, register through the Passport Seva Online Portal. (Click on “Register Now” (link on the Home Page).
  • Fourthly, login to the Passport Seva Online Portal with the registered Login Id.
  • Fifthly, upload the XML file (generated in Step 2) through the “Upload e-Form”  upload the XML file is accepted by the system.
  • Sixthly, Click the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link on the “View Saved/Submitted Applications” screen to schedule an appointment.

Note:

  • Only emergency/medical cases and preapproved categories may visit Passport Seva Kendra without an appointment. Service will be provided at the discretion of Passport Seva Kendra in-charge/Passport Officer.
  • In case of minor applicants (below 4 years of age), carry the recent passport size photograph (4.5 X 3.5 cm) with white background.
  •  In case, the applicant does not visit the Passport Seva Kendra within 90 days from the online form submission. Resubmission of the application form is required.
