After you pass your Driving test, there is a plethora of lifetime freedom and excitement. But, with great power, behold great responsibility, and drivers who are unaware of the rules risk penalty.

You will receive Driving Licence Points, also known as endorsements depending on your offence. Since the New Drivers Act (NDA) came into action in 1995, earning 6 driving licence points within the first 2 years of driving will revoke your licence.

Before you read on, remember when most people think of a driving licence, they prioritise passing the driving test. After all, that is the fundamental barrier keeping you from getting behind the wheel. Therefore, knowing which licence category you need is equally essential before deciding further.

What does a revoked licence mean?

Having your licence revoked actually means your licence has been cancelled. You are restricted from driving any vehicle until you get your new provisional licence with the total applicable charges.

Once you’ve been subjected, you must go through the same process for your practical & theory tests. You can drive with full authority after the DVLA is ensured your driving and safety.

Revocation isn’t the same as disqualification, as it is reserved for more severe driving offences such as drugs or drunk driving.

Being disqualified for driving means, you are restricted from getting behind the wheel for a specific period of time. Usually, there’s no need to resit the test after the time period.

What actions will result in points on my licence?

The common law says drivers earn endorsements on their licence after committing the offence. Offences such as – speeding, getting too close to vehicles, and having no insurance can cause points on your licence.

Mind you: Less severe offences, such as not informing the DVLA about your medical conditions or new correspondence address, will also result in points on your licence.

Of course, the penalty is judged by the severity of the offence, such as using a mobile phone while driving can earn you 6 driving licence points. Committing it will revoke your licence immediately, especially when you are a new driver.

Understand that even the least endorsable severe offence carries 3 driving licence points – blow your second chance, and you’ll go back to where it all started and do it all over again.

What if I get driving licence points on my provisional licence?

Learner drivers are held for the same test procedures as qualified drivers. This means you can receive driving licence points if you commit the offence. Checking up on your provisional licence, any valid endorsements are transferred to your full driving licence after passing the test.

These driving licence points are measured towards your six-point limit during the two-year probationary period.
