How to Approach T Junctions – FleetSpeak Explains

Here are a few things you need to remember while approaching or negotiating T Junctions while learning to drive.

T Junctions on quiet roads are perhaps unmarked to see any Road markings or indicators, but most of them either have reference signs like ‘Give Way’ or ‘Stop’ sign where drivers can approach and identify what type of T junction is ahead of them.

While approaching T Junctions, you will follow the Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed, Look technique (MSPSL). Here’s how you can use it:

  1. Fair use of mirrors;
  2. signalling at the right time;
  3. assuming a proper position for the turn;
  4. approaching speed and selecting the right gear;
  5. Adequate observation when junction approaches. Can you see the main road clearly? Is the junction available or restricted?

Know This While Turning left at T junctions

Please note: You should begin your routine at approximately ten car lengths from the junction.

  • Check the right, centre and left mirrors of your vehicle.
  • Signal your left side (If you found any left street before your intended junction, give the signal after passing that street. So the drivers’ back side won’t be confused).
  • You can position one metre from the left kerb (Only if there is enough road width).
  • Keep your position centred if the road is narrow or the vehicles obstruct your way.
  • Reduce the speed when necessary and keep giving way to each passing pedestrian.
  • As you approach, note any obstructions and parked vehicles on the new road (At or before the end of the line while preparing for the left turn).
  • Check if the T junction is closed or open to have a broad view so you can clearly see the buildings, trees, parked vehicles etc., in front.
  • Closed T Junctions: When the Junction is closed, stop near the give way sign and assess the road view. You might need to change to first gear and use your clutch and brake to pull out slowly to get yourself out safely.
  • Open T Junctions: If you see the view in front clearly and believe it’s safe to pull out, change to the first or second gear and continue moving onto the next road.
  • If you ever encounter the STOP sign, you must stop and follow the sign orders until it is removed or change the route altogether.
Stop completely when you see the stop sign.

Know This While Turning Right at T Junctions

While turning right is as same as following the instructions on turning left, using the Mirrors, Signals, Position, Speed and Look Routine (MSPSL) BUT, with a but with a preference to the right!

  • Check mirrors (Right, Centre and Left) and look for vehicles overtaking you.
  • Assess the right side of the street and start signalling when it’s time.
  • Position your vehicle to the right and If there is a right turn lane, take it. Align the wheels straight after reaching the right lane.
  • Stop or pause when needed.
  • If the junction is closed, assess and move out slowly (peep or creep) using your clutch and brake control.
  • If the junction is open with a clear view, you can simply but safely move on to the next road.
  • In the end, you might end up in moving traffic. So, ensure that you are moving across the first lane and towards the far lane without trying to cause other traffic to slow down or halt.
  • You must check your rare view mirror at times to estimate your vehicle speed and heading traffic.
  • Allow a safe driving side and make sure the signal has been cancelled.

Be aware if the road further is a one-way street or one wrong judgement can pull you against the oncoming traffic.
