Volvo Trucks is introducing a new safety system to detect other road users entering the blind spot on both sides of its trucks.

In busy traffic situations, it is difficult for even the most experienced driver to perceive everything around the vehicle. 

Now, to increase safety and ease stress on the driver, Volvo Trucks is offering its new system which uses a dual radar on each side of the vehicle to detect when other road users, such as cyclists, enter the risk area.

‘System helps the driver to prevent potential collisions’

Anna Wrige Berling, the traffic and product safety director at Volvo Trucks, said: “An accident can happen in a split second. Our extensive accident research is based on decades of studying real-life situations, and this new safety system helps the driver to prevent potential collisions.

“At Volvo Trucks, our long-term vision is zero accidents and safety is at the core of everything we do. This new system is another example of our efforts to accomplish these aims.”

When someone is in the blind spot zone, the system, called Side Collision Avoidance Support, informs the driver via a red light on the relevant side mirror. 

If the driver indicates a lane change via the turn signal, the red light starts to flash, and a warning sound emits from the side of the potential collision. 

The driver is alerted and can then brake the truck and allow, for example, a cyclist to pass.

The new system will be available globally on the Volvo FH range, FM and FMX with diesel, gas and electric drivelines, starting in September this year. The Volvo FL and FE models will get the new safety system in 2023.

DHL and Volvo Trucks sign new zero emission cooperation with order for 44 electric trucks

Meanwhile, Volvo Trucks has announced that Deutsche Post DHL Group has signed a cooperation agreement to accelerate the shift to zero exhaust emission vehicles. 

DHL intends to intensify its transition to heavy electric trucks by deploying a total of 44 new electric Volvo trucks on routes in Europe.

Pablo Ciano, the executive vice president of corporate strategy at DHL, said: “Several of our divisions will benefit from this agreement with Volvo Trucks.

“The intended order includes 40 electric Volvo FE and FLs, to be used for package deliveries in urban transport. 

“Electric trucks for longer routes are also part of the scope and DHL has decided to begin using Volvo trucks for regional distribution, starting with four Volvo FM Electric trucks in the UK.” 

The first trucks have been ordered already, six by DHL Parcel UK and two by DHL Freight. This will result in annual savings of nearly 600 tonnes of CO2 and nearly 225,000 litres of diesel for Deutsche Post DHL Group.
