Coronavirus creating a new headache for trucking

The Coronavirus, which started in the Hubei province of China, is causing disruption to the global supply chain.

As more people are confirmed to have the Virus, travel along many routes in and out of China has been banned and local factories near the primary area of infection have been shut down.

With many countries around the world only producing a small percentage of what they consume, people are realising a lot of the goods they take for granted originate in China.

With many of these imports transported by truck from China, there has been a sizeable decrease in outbound shipments. The virus has yet to be contained so we are yet to see the peak of its impact. This means that the knock-on effect will continue to be felt by the trucking industry for some time.

Experts are urging people not to get overly anxious about the coronavirus. The common flu virus killed 61,200 people last year, while malaria kills 400,000 people annually. With the death toll under 500 and less than 25,000 confirmed cases (176 outside China), the figures put the severity of this virus into perspective.
