IND vs NZ, World Cup 2023: New Zealand’s Dominance over India in ICC Tournaments

In the upcoming clash between India and New Zealand at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, the historical dominance of the Kiwis over the Men-in-Blue in ICC tournaments cannot be ignored. The trend began with their victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, where India faced its only defeat in the tournament at the hands of New Zealand. The Black Caps put up a formidable total of 190 runs, and despite an explosive start by India’s openers, they fell short by just 10 runs.

In the 2016 T20 World Cup, hosted by India, New Zealand again stunned the home team with a 47-run victory. India’s top bowlers made early inroads into the Kiwi batting order, but New Zealand managed to post a total of 126. India struggled to chase down this target, with only a few batsmen reaching double figures.

One of the most painful memories for Indian cricket fans is the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Trent Boult and Matt Henry, dismantled India’s top order, leaving them at 5/3 and later 24/4. Despite a valiant effort from Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni, India fell short of the target, marking the end of Dhoni’s illustrious international career.

In the inaugural 2021 World Test Championship final, New Zealand emerged victorious against India. The Kiwi bowlers exploited the conditions well, and India struggled to find their rhythm, being bowled out for just 170 runs. New Zealand chased down the fourth-innings target of 139 to become the first-ever ICC World Test Champions.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2021 saw another defeat for India at the hands of New Zealand. New Zealand’s bowlers, including Trent Boult and Ish Sodhi, restricted India to 110/7. In response, New Zealand secured victory with ease, adding to India’s woes in ICC tournaments.

As India prepares to face New Zealand in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, they are well aware of the historical challenges posed by their counterparts.
