Shelly Oberoi declared new Mayor of Delhi after 75 days, Kejriwal says victory over ‘goons’

By Sanjay Kumar

On Wednesday (February 22), Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was declared the winner of the mayoral election. This followed a recent order by the Supreme Court that nominated members would not be allowed to participate in the voting process.

Oberoi secured 150 votes, while the BJP candidate, Rekha Gupta, received 116 votes. Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, congratulated Oberoi on her victory, stating that “the goons lost, the public won.”

AAP National Convener and Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, echoed Sisodia’s sentiment and congratulated the people of Delhi on Oberoi’s win. In accordance with the Supreme Court’s verdict, Oberoi will now preside over the remaining elections, which include the deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee.

Oberoi assured members that she would lead the House in a constitutional manner and called for their cooperation. After taking the seat of mayor, she said, “I assure you all that I will run this House in a constitutional manner. I expect you all will maintain the dignity of the House and cooperate in its smooth functioning.”

The mayoral election was conducted after three failed attempts, as ordered by the Supreme Court. In the MCD polls held on December 4, 2022, the AAP emerged as the clear winner, winning 134 wards and ending the BJP’s 15-year rule in the civic body. The BJP secured 104 wards to finish second, while the Congress won nine seats in the 250-member Municipal House.
