Bangalore to Chennai in just 2-3 hours once this much-awaited expressway is completed: Here’s all you need to know

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inspected the Karnataka section of the under-construction Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway. Interacting with the media, Union Minister Gadkari said that the new expressway between the two mega cities of South India will be completed by March 2024.
The 4-lane Expressway (expandable to eight if required) which is 285 km long is being constructed at a cost of INR 17,000 crores.

“It is designed for a speed of 120 kmph and shortened the distance between Bengaluru & Chennai from 300 km to 262 km,” he said. It will pass through the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu and will help reduce the travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai.
It will reduce the travel time to just 2-3 hours and reduce the distance between the two cities by about 40 km. Currently, it takes around seven hours to take the NH48 from Bengaluru to Chennai.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said, “The project will be economical for vehicle operators and reduce fuel consumption. It will strengthen economic activities in Bengaluru and Chennai and connect industrial centers in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to Chennai port.”

- Bengaluru-Chennai expressway is one of the 26 new green expressways.
- The expressway is a four-lane double-decker elevated road.
- Starting from Hoskote on the outskirts of Bengaluru, it will pass through Malur, Bangarpet, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Palamaner, Chittoor, and Ranipet towns on the way. The expressway will end at Sriperumbudur in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
- Gadkari said, “The Bengaluru-Mysuru highway project will be completed by February 2023. We will invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi or President Draupadi Murmu to inaugurate it.” The Union Minister also conducted an aerial survey of the highways. He said the ministry is also working on the Bengaluru Satellite Ring Road project, which is estimated to cost INR 17,000 crore.
