COVID-19 Coronavirus Impact On The Economy

The number of COVID-19 Coronavirus has exceeded 80,000 with a fatality rate of around 2%. Several airlines in asia has announced reduced flights in anticipation of reduced air travel between asian countries.

The tourism sector has took a direct hit from this crisis. In recent weeks, Asia-pacific air travel cancelation has exceeded 200,000, sending fuel prices lower in fear of reduced demand. Furthermore, Apple has also warned of reduced manufacturing activity in China.

Spike in cases outside China

South korea, Italy and Iran reported a spike in Coronavirus virus in recent weeks. South Korea reported close to 3 thousand cases and 16 deaths.

Hotel businesses in Asia has reported a dip in occupancy rate. Airlines have cut flights and some airlines have announced pay cuts for its management.

Containment Effectiveness

Containment efforts have been far from perfect in Asia with countries showing a spike in cases in recent weeks. World Health Organization has upgraded the risk of spread to the highest level this week.

South Korea and Iran are now at heightened alert after new cases surged in recent weeks. In addition, Iran reported an alarming 43 deaths.

One form of containment policy is to identify cluster and quarantine the people who have prolong contact with the cluster. The effectiveness of this containment policy depends on the ability to accurately identify clusters in a timely manner.
