It seems so far away, but I’m sure a year will fly by. In a little less than 365 days, I’ll be walking down the aisle… in a wedding dress that I made. When I got engaged in June, I didn’t have any interest in making my dress. Hell no! Then something changed. Not sure what.

In August, I had my first appointment at Liberty and Lace and I’ll be honest, it was bittersweet. I wish my mom was there. I fell in love with one style (not this one pictured here), and Julie, the owner, reached out the designer, Kelly Faetanini, to see if she would allow me to use the same lace to construct my own version. I was stunned – she said yes! So, I’ll be spending the next year deconstructing some of my mom’s dresses and incorporating bits and pieces to create my own with KF’s lace. That way, my mom will be with me on my big day. I’ll be using McCall’s 7540 as a base pattern.

It may sound difficult, but I don’t think it will be as difficult as it seems. Time-consuming, yes, but difficult, no. Like any sewing project, if you have the right materials and planning, you’ll be just fine. I am starting this project about a year ahead so that I can go through the different steps of the process and really do it right. My goal is to have my dress completely finished at least two months out from my Wedding to make sure that I spend those last two months worrying about other things.

Here’s the game plan:

July: Get ideas (check out my Pinterest board!)
August: Try on styles
September through December: Pick pattern + fabric
January – February: Make muslin
March: Alter muslim
April – July: Sew dress!
