Free Analysis

The market for microbial Fuel cells is projected to augment owing to the presence of several stringent government regulations regarding the use of fossil fuels and climate change. It is a well recognized fact that there is a global need for alternative sources of energy. Moreover, current reliance on fossil fuels accounts as unsustainable due to finite supply as well as pollution. Thus, microbial fuel cells have emerged as the most viable solution to this problem, as they not only generate bio-energy but also aid in removing carbon and nitrogen.

Microbial fuel cells are devices that convert chemical energy into electrical energy during substrate oxidation with the help of microorganisms that act as biocatalysts. The energy contained in organic matter is converted into useful electrical power. MFCs operate, as electrons from the microorganisms are transferred from a reduced electron donor to an electron acceptor at a higher electrochemical potential.

Electrons produced by the bacteria from these substrates are then transferred to the anode (negative terminal) and flow to the cathode (positive terminal) that is linked by a conductive material containing a resistor. The device must be capable of having the substrate oxidized at the anode replenished, either regularly or irregularly, otherwise the system is considered to be a bio battery. The performance of MFCs is likely to be influenced by various factors such as the rate of substrate oxidation, resistance of the circuit, electron transfer to the electrode by the microbes, proton transport to the cathode through membrane, and oxygen supply & reduction in the cathode.

The concept of microbial fuel cells is not new, but the development till date has been fairly slow. The primary reason for this is that the materials required to make better electrodes have only recently become readily available. Thus, the cells could only generate small amounts of power. However, with high availability of materials along with a better understanding of microbes that produce power, MFCs are increasingly gaining attention.

In addition, growing use for microbial fuel cells across a diverse range of applications including power generation, wastewater treatment, bio-hydrogen production, and biosensors, among others has fostered the market demand over the forecast period. However, as MFCs are operative only until the microbes are kept alive, they cannot be considered as a source of consistent primary power. Moreover, high cost of MFCs coupled with changes in temperature, fuel, and contaminants may hinder the market growth for commercial MFCs over the next seven years.

Some of the key companies operating in the industry include Cambrian Innovation Inc.; Sainergy Tech, Inc.; MICROrganic Technologies; Prongineer; Vinpro Technologies; Triqua International BV; Fluence Corporation; among others.
