Free Analysis

The market for spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is projected to augment owing to its growing use in end-use industries such as construction, electronics, automotive, packaging and medical, among others. In order to reduce the carbon footprint and foster energy conservation, several key regulations have been introduced across the globe to promote the use of SPF. Additionally, considerable growth in the automotive, as well as construction industries, is expected to further propel the market demand.

Spray polyurethane foam can be derived by the mixing of isocyanates such as methyl diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and polyols in the presence of catalysts and blowing agents. These two liquid components are joined under pressure in a spray nozzle, and are directly applied onto roofs or walls. This results in its expansion, thereby making it a suitable packaging material and high thermal insulator.

Spray foam formulas can be tweaked to have several different physical properties depending on their desired use. For instance, the same raw materials can not only be used to make insulation foam that is semi-rigid as well as soft to touch, but can also create a high-density roofing foam that is resistant to water and wind. SPF is generally used as an insulating material on construction substrates, and possesses higher energy conservation qualities. SPF may also act as an air barrier, bulk water barrier and a moisture vapour retarder.

SPF being a versatile building material can be applied to a diverse range of surfaces and irregular shapes in order to provide acoustic as well as thermal insulation. Its R-value reduces the conductive heat transfer, whereas its air barrier properties help minimize convective heat transfer. Spray polyurethane foam also restricts the entry of unwanted dust, allergens, and pollen, while improving the indoor air quality. In addition, SPF lowers HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) equipment requirements by 50% owing to reduced cooling and heating demands coupled with low equipment costs.

Additionally, spray polyurethane foam meets building codes and contributes to various green building certifications such as LEED for residential and commercial buildings; ENERGY STAR; IECC; ASHRAE Standard 90.1; National Association of Home Builders Green Building Standard; and US Army Corps Building Air Tightness Requirements (ECB 2009-29); among others. Also, SPF is used across a diverse range of applications, one of it being, its use as a solution for cold vessel insulation for products such as chemicals, wines and soft drinks. SPF accounts for an excellent solution for storing products that require controlled temperatures owing to its durability.

Moreover, SPF offers ease of installation and maintenance which makes it an ideal fit for building and construction applications. Also, SPF being a natural shock-absorber, even heavy wind-blown items such as metal panels, tree limbs and concrete tiles can only superficially damage spray foam substrates. However, if the wind-driven debris somehow damages the surface of the foam, it resists peel off, and still continues to provide water resistance to the interior of the building.

However, raw materials used in the manufacture of spray polyurethane foam are toxic and can cause severe health hazard such as asthma; lung damage; sensitization; irritation of skin and eye; and other respiratory problems.  Thus, various safety standards provided by key organizations must be adhered to while using SPF. Also, volatility in the raw material prices may hinder the market growth over the next seven years.

Some of the key companies operating in the industry include Lapolla Industries, Inc.; BASF Corporation; BaySeal; Accella Polyurethane Systems, LLC; CertainTeed Corporation; Rhino Linings Corporation; The Dow Chemical Company; NCFI Polyurethanes; Icynene; Huntsman International LLC; Specialty Products Inc.; Henry Company; and Foam Supplies Inc.; among others.
