Should You Tip Movers?

One of the questions we get asked when it comes to moving is whether you should tip your Movers.

The answer is absolutely YES!
Nothing shows your moving team that you appreciate the hard work that they put in like a big tip at the end of a move. Think about it for a minute. Waiters and waiters get a tip for bringing you a simple meal and drink, while your movers wrap and protect all of your furniture like your bed, dresser, tables, chairs, couched, You are not required to tip your driver though so if they did a bad job, you do not need to provide the tip.

When Should I Tip My Mover?

Some instances when you will want to consider tipping your movers include:

• They showed up at the move site on time.
• They finished the move in a timely fashion.
• They had a particularly difficult move to work on, such as a hard flight of stairs on either end.
• They stayed around to help you pack up some of your belongings.
• They were able to move all of your things without causing any damage, regardless of how long the move was.
• They did something else that wowed you with how professional they were and gave amazing customer service.

Basically, you will want to tip the movers any time that they really impress you with their service and how well they were able to assist with the move.

When Should I Not Tip My Mover?

There are also a few times when you may want to skip out on the tip altogether. If you worked with a mover who showed up late without a good reason or who damaged a lot of your items, then not wanting to tip makes sense. In addition, if the movers acted unprofessional, you should be sure to let the company know.

How Much Do I Need to Tip?

There aren’t really any strict rules on how much you should tip the movers. When you decide to provide a tip though, it is a good idea to give each member of the crew the same amount. You can also just deal with the head mover and tell them the tip should be split up evenly with everyone.

A general guideline if you need help is to tip the movers somewhere between five to ten percent. So, if your move costs you about $1200, then you would tip a total starting at $60 for all the movers.

If you do not feel comfortable giving out cash to your movers, there are other ways to provide a tip. You could offer some cool refreshments or offer some breakfast if they will be there to move you early in the morning. A nice pizza for a move that takes some more time, especially when a lot of boxes are present, can help make them happy and gives them a nice tip, without needing to hand over money.

It is acceptable to tip your movers, but only do this if they provide exemplary service to you during the move. If you were not impressed by the work they did or they end up breaking a lot of your personal items, then it is best not to tip at all.
