Spring Time, Plumbing Time: A stitch in time saves nine!

The toughest time cleaning your house is the Spring time. After that long and chilly winter, things thaw up and you might find a couple of plugs clogging up your drains, leaking toilets and water heaters, and many more such arduous jobs waiting a fix. Well its just the right time to do some repair and maintenance that if left unchecked would wreck in the future. Here are few plumbing tips to be carried out in Spring time.

Tweaking the temperatures- All through the winters you had a good hot water bath. You had set the Temperature of the water heater in accordance with the season- winter. Its Spring now and its time to tweak the temperature. Its recommended to keep the temperature at 120 degrees. Going beyond that may sear your water heater.

Water leaks- The water running in the pipes froze in the chilly season and now the pipes are thawing. Check all faucets- outdoors and indoors for leaks. If there is a leak, the pipes have cracked and the water is damping your walls and ceilings or just leaking under your lawn.

Toilet leaks- The best way to find out if your toilet is leaking is to put a little color dye in the water tank. Leave it for half an hour. If the water in the bowl turns to the color of the dye, you put in the tank, its time to call for help. Leaky toilets can waste up to 1000 gallon of water per day.

Basements- Check your basements for the water that might have flooded it, melting from the snow or by the April showers. Siphoning out this water could be a tedious job if your sump pump gets stuck. Check your sump pumps in Spring time and make sure they are running. It is recommended to have a backup sump pump.

Valves- Valves typically get rusted as they are not turned for a while. Checking valves every 3 months could render them in a working condition also jet some oil on them and they will be free as a wheel.

Gutters- Perhaps the that one thing which is exposed all the time and so gets clogged by leaves, sediments and debris in the gutter. A clogged gutter leads to choking of the downspouts. Clearing downspouts can be a tiresome job. Check and clear the gutters to get the free flow later in the year.
