PHARR, Texas – Hundreds of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) high school students and their parents attended the 24th Annual Psja College Night event held at PSJA North Early College High School on October 17, 2023.

Since 1999, PSJA College Night has given PSJA students the opportunity to meet with university representatives from institutions from across the state and nation and get important information regarding the college admission process, financial aid, and scholarships.

With over 50 university representatives present, students were able to ask questions necessary to help them navigate through the experience of selecting their future college or university.

According to PSJA ISD College Transition and GEAR UP Director Carlos Garcia, holding this annual event makes an impact on the students and their families as they get to speak one-on-one with recruiters from the college of their choice helping them build connections and become familiar with other students interested in attending the same institution.

“We want our students to be exposed to the different colleges so they can make the right choice for their future,” said Garcia. “We have some alumni here tonight who attended this event when they were in high school and are now back as representatives for their universities. That shows just how much of an impact this event can have on students.”

For PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM ECHS Senior Victoria Hurtado, attending the event opened her eyes to the various programs available at different institutions.

“I came to the event only interested in one university, but once I started walking around and asking questions other universities caught my attention,” said Hurtado. “I aspire to become an attorney, so I began looking into universities with Pre-law programs and it was really interesting, I learned a lot of useful information once I started asking questions.”

In addition to higher education institutions, various scholarship organizations were also present at the event including the PSJA Education Foundation which provides thousands in scholarships to graduating PSJA ISD seniors each year.  The PSJA Education Foundation Scholarship application will be opening November 1, 2023, through Jan. 28, 2024. All current PSJA ISD students are eligible to apply.
