EDINBURG – HidalgoCounty Tax Assessor-Collector Pablo “Paul” Villarreal, Jr. announced on Thursday that his office will need to send out two Property Tax Bills this year because eight different school districts face rollback elections on the November 7, 2023 ballot.

State law requires that voters approve the property tax rate if the school adopts a rate above the Voter Approval Rate.  For the first time in eleven years, an automatic election is required for approval of the tax rate in eight different taxing entities.

“We strive to mail out the consolidated Tax Bills in late October to give homeowners plenty of time to pay their taxes,” said Villarreal. “Because voters are being asked in November to approve a tax rate in eight different school districts, we will be sending out two tax bills this year.  We have inter-local agreements with the other 34 taxing entities and must send the consolidated tax statements no later than November 1st to meet our contractual obligations.”

The first tax bill is scheduled to be sent out in late October and will include taxes for taxing entities such as Hidalgo County; Hidalgo County Drainage District #1; South Texas College; South Texas ISD; municipalities, and several other school districts not affected by the November election. Following the November 7th election, a second tax bill will be sent out by the school districts to property owners living in the affected school districts:

·         Edinburg CISD

·         Hidalgo ISD

·         La Joya ISD

·         McAllen ISD

·         Mission CISD

·         Monte Alto ISD

·         PSJA ISD

·         Progreso ISD

Property taxes are due by January 31, 2024
