Angels of Love Applauds Community for Successful Fundraiser 

Angels of Love honored the recipients of its 3rd Annual Black & White Awards Gala recognizing community members who embody the nonprofit’s mission. The organization—which aims to provide free services to victims of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking across the Rio Grande Valley—presented the awards at the Black & White Awards Gala on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Organizers say the event was a success, led by the Chair Luly Pena, Honorary Chair Leah Wise and Committee members. They thank everyone that in any way contributed and supported them in their endeavors, including all private donations silent auction donations, in-kind donations and volunteers who made it possible for Angels of Love to continue their mission.

More than 225 people attended the event, which featured dinner, music, photobooths, entertainment, the awards ceremony and a silent auction. Leah Wise, Attorney at Law was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event. A Red-Carpet Reception and cocktail hour were enjoyed by all. Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney Terry Palacios gave the invocation.

Juan Cano received the Vision Award, which recognizes a community leader committed to ending domestic violence in the state and community. 

Amy Bayona was the recipient of the Community Angel Award. This award is given to an individual, business or corporation that has made a significant impact on the domestic violence arena. Amy Bayona is currently the Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit for the Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney’s office. She is passionate about domestic violence issues and is a results-oriented leader.

Nicole Azuara, victim advocate for the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office was the recipient of the Excellence in Advocacy Awardwhich is bestowed on a Domestic Violence Advocate that goes above and beyond to help victims of violence and is passionate to make a difference.

Isela Marin, Victim Advocate for Mission Police Department received the Starfish Award. This award is given to an individual who practices the art of caring in the Domestic Violence arena. 

The Courage Award recognizes a survivor who has demonstrated courage to escape her abuser and create a new life. Cindy Cavazos Mendez was this year’s recipient. 

Chief Cesar Torres, Mission Police Chief received the Generosity of Spirit Award for having a significant impact on domestic violence through his true passion to help victims. 

Family violence continues to be a major problem in Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. Nearly 200,000 Texans were beaten by their intimate partners in 2022. 74% of all Texans either know someone who has been a victim of domestic violence or have been victims themselves. It is estimated the U.S. economy loses $8.4 billion annually due to domestic violence. Statistics tell us the only human service directly correlated with a decrease in domestic violence is access to legal solutions.
