St. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s tennis team swept the Utah Tech (UT) Trailblazers 7-0 Sunday at the Trailblazers Tennis Courts to extend their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) winning streak to five matches.

This is the longest conference winning streak and most conference wins for UTRGV (10-6, 5-1 WAC) since the Vaqueros went 14-9, 5-0 in the WAC in 2018.

The Vaqueros picked up a hard-earned doubles point, their fifth in a row. Sophomore Daniela Rosenberger and senior Stefanie Wilske controlled the No. 3 match and won 6-2. The No. 1 duo of junior Lea Karren and sophomore Barbara Martinez battled for an important 7-6 (7:5) win to secure the 1-0 lead after UT (2-15, 0-5 WAC) evened the doubles session at No. 2.

UTRGV rode its massive wave of momentum to complete the sweep in singles. Martinez continued to roll and picked up a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win the No. 4 match, improving to 5-1 in conference singles play. Rosenberger earned her first conference win of the season 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. Junior Isabelle Bahr clinched the team victory with a good 6-1, 6-4 win in the No. 1 match.

Wilske won her fourth match in a row to make it 5-0 UTRGV. She held off a comeback attempt in the second set to take the 6-1, 7-6 (7:3) win on the fifth court. Karren tallied a solid win with a strong finish in the second set of her No. 2 match, 6-4, 7-6 (7:4).

Sophomore Marjorie Souza showed a lot of grit in her No. 3 match. After dropping the first set 6-7 (4:7) to Adithi Venkatakrishnan, Souza responded well to win the second 6-2 and force a 10-point tiebreaker in the third frame. The tiebreaker was tight and Souza continued to show great fight when down, including erasing an early 3-5 deficit to jump on top 6-5. Souza then maintained a slim lead until winning, 1-0 (10:7). She is now 5-1 in WAC singles action and riding a five-match win streak.

UTRGV’s next match will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at UT Arlington.
