Team Gray Wins Track & Field Orange & Gray Meet

EDINBURG, Texas – The energy was high and competitive spirit strong as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field program participated in their Orange and Gray Week at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex, won by Team Gray 294-274. 

Competition started Wednesday with the shot put and hammer throw, long jump, 60-Meter Dash and 400-meter dash. Though the weather wasn’t favorable, the Vaqueros put together some strong performances. Team Gray held a 138-129 lead over Team Orange after the first day of competition. 

Graduate student Marlene Gutierrez won both women’s throwing events on Wednesday, earning 20 points for Team Gray. She tossed the shot put 14.40 meters and marked 55.59 meters in the hammer throw. 

Freshman Nayla Harris took first in the women’s long jump with a jump of 6.12 meters and was the fastest finisher in a busy women’s 60-meter dash, running 7.84 to slimly beat freshman Symoria Adkins, who finished in 7.85. Freshman Jedidiah Udunna hit 7.93 meters to win the men’s long jump.

Redshirt sophomore Jaleel Scott won the men’s 60-meter dash in 6.94. Junior Aisha Gay took first in the women’s 400-meter dash in 57.03, and freshman Jamari Harts won the men’s 400-meter dash in 49.24. 

On Friday, Team Gray secured its victory with five event wins. Gutierrez continued her strong meet with a first-place finish in the women’s weight throw with a toss of 16.96 meters. Freshman Hannah Hilding won the women’s discus with a throw of 46.38 meters. Senior La Feria alum Julian Trevino won the men’s javelin with a mark of 51.04 meters. 

Freshman Ashley Lingueno cleared 5’10” to win the women’s high jump. In the men’s high jump, freshmen Noel Asiedu and Edinburg Economedes alum Orlando Martinez both cleared 6’4”. Freshman Ray’janae Pettit won the women’s jump with a mark of 11.43 meters and freshman Aaron Cooper won the men’s long jump with a mark of 15.24 meters. 

Freshman Symoria Adkins was victorious in two track events. She won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.44 and the 200-meter dash in 24.31. Junior Mission Veterans Memorial alum Alex Galvan won the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 8.25. Sophomore Jalen Nero claimed first in the men’s 200-meter dash in 21.46. 

Junior Samantha Gonzalez finished first in the women’s 1,500-meter run in 4:51.7, and freshman McAllen Memorial alum Sebastian Salinas won the men’s 1,500-meter run in 3:54.6. Senior Edinburg North alum Tristan Pena also ran sub-four minutes, clocking in at 3:59.1. 

The Vaqueros will kick off track & field with their indoor season in January. The schedule will be released at a later date.
