UPDATE: SUNDAY SPEAKER SERIES – May 29th

EDINBURG, Texas — The Museum of South Texas History commemorates Memorial Day with the Sunday Speaker Series presentation, “The Letters of Freddy González,” featuring Museum CEO Francisco Guajardo, Ph.D., and Juan J. Gonzales at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29.

Guajardo with MOSTHistory’s facilities and security supervisor Juan J. Gonzales, a retired Army First Sgt., will highlight the letters Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” González. These letters were sent to his mother, Dolia González, while he served two combat tours with the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

Since the 1980s, the museum has produced several different exhibits featuring Sgt. González’s Congressional Medal of Honor, uniform and a variety of other artifacts. Currently the museum displays Sgt. González’s uniform and medals. However, the letters were the missing piece of Sgt. González’s story.

During the summer of 2020, Dolia González donated more than 150 letters from her son, who wrote between 1965 and a few days before his death in 1968. A portion of the letters are currently on display through the spotlight exhibit, “Letters Home – Part of the Sgt. Freddy González Letters Collection,” and will run through September 2022.

This program is made possible by the generous support from the Carmen C. Guerra Endowment. Mrs. Guerra was committed to educational causes in the Rio Grande Valley. This named endowment was created by her family to honor her memory and to continue providing educational opportunities for the community.

EDINBURG, Texas — Several letters written by Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” González will be on display at the Museum of South Texas History for the first time from May 3 to Sept. 5.

“Letters Home – Part of the Sgt. Freddy González Letters Collection” spotlight exhibit will feature a portion of Sgt. González’s letters donated by his mother, Dolia González, in 2020. Copies of the letters will be on display only.

The full collection, a 100-plus letter archive, were written by Sgt. González while he served overseas in the Vietnam War. These letters demonstrate the beautiful relationship Sgt. González had with his mother and grandmother including the love for friends and extended family, and his hometown of Edinburg, Texas.

The spotlight exhibit is in correspondence with Memorial Day and will continue to run until early September 2022.

“Letters Home” is included in the regular museum admission fees. Museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the exhibit, please contact Collections and Exhibits Coordinator Melissa Peña at 956-383-6911 or [email protected]
